We’ve been mighty quick to write guys off.

In all fairness, it’s been feast (Tunsil, Minkah) or famine (Parker, Harris) for a few years.

I read another thread where guys are saying Gesicki is a bust. Nah, it’s a slow developing position. No, we had **** coaches....

We invested a 1st round pick in Harris. Somebody (probably several somebodies for a first rounder) liked what they saw.

He’s a bit small for an NFL DE at 6’3, 250. I prefer 6’5 or 6’6, 270 myself, old school I guess.

Do you guys think, with a revamped coaching staff that can hopefully, you know, coach, can we find a use for this kid?

If he does not progress big time this year, then bust.
Same for Geisicki and Smythe

Coaching is one issue, and Kacy Rogers is definitely missed for DL coach... but he may always underperform his draft position.

I like to think he can be made serviceable but he's never gonna be a first rounder on the field and a star

He's terrible.

What a bad draft pick. Let's get a guy in the first who can't rush the passer as our pass rush specialist to replace wake. Just a complete waste of a pick

Harris will probably never live up to his draft position, maybe Flores can turn him into a decent rotational guy. This is probably his last year to show something before they cut him so he better step his game up or be ready to utilize that degree he got in college. To anyone declaring Gesicki a bust after only his rookie season I can only assume they just started watching football or have terrible memories of past years and players.

Good question, I wish I knew.

Early on in the draft process I wasn't a fan of his, but we needed a DE so the idea kinda grew on me and I gave him a chance. He does have good quickness, but just not enough explosive burst, speed, leverage, hand placement or any bull rush to really be an effective pass rusher. It's just his counter move--the spin--that is really nice. Unfortunately, it's a counter, and he has no primary move, so OL never fall for it. He's bad at setting the edge, doesn't have elite physical traits, and I saw nothing that really screamed OLB, so my suspicion is that he's a bust … but I don't feel that I have a clear read on this guy, so I'm just going to say … I don't know.

That’s my take as well.

I dunno. I believe Wake is the exception at 6’3. But he also has 15-20 pounds on Harris.

Oh yeah: Wake also has an engine.

Makes a difference.

The defensive system may allow him more opportunities to get to the qb unabated due to confusion, etc. if you look at guys like Rob Ninokovich, they thrived once they arrived in NE.

Flores probably learned some tricks like standing several front guys up so the qb can’t get a read on who’s rushing.

If Harris were left to go get the qb on the basis of physical ability, he’d be hopeless. We’ve seen how that movie ends. But, he profiles as a later round, try harder type, that might provide some production based on learning assignments in clever schemes and hustling. I could envision seven plus sacks in that type of situation if things come together.

Almost everyone on the board knew this was a suspect pick when it happened. So weird that pro draft graders couldn’t see that

Agreed. Wake can play an OLB in a 3 man front easily. The issue with him will be whether the new coaching staff wants his veteran leadership or wants to blood a younger guy. At his salary he's not going to sign cheaply even assuming he gives us a hometown discount. He may want a multi-year contract too, and I don't see the new regime doing that … although I hope they do. Cam Wake stills plays at a high level, he just needs to be on a limited snap count. Older veterans wanting to sign multi-year deals tend not to survive regime changes, so we'll see.

Good point. I think that because this multiple front defense schemes guys unabated to the QB it lets someone like Jerome Baker wrack up a few sacks … but I'm curious just how Charles Harris will be utilized in it. It could be a great opportunity for him … I just can't gauge how he will do in this system.

It was a pretty big risk to take Harris in the 1st. He has some good physical traits but has a ton to learn. Hopefully a regime change benefits him cuz he was going nowhere before.
