Miami is over halfway done with free agency. There have been quite a few signings. Let's take a look.
On Offense: Culpepper (QB), Beasley (FB), Peelle (TE), Shelton (LT), and Campbell (WR).
It seems to me that Saban has found the replacement for McIntosh with Shelton. Culpepper replaces Frerotte and gives Miami the best QB they have had since Dan Marino. Beasley gives Miami an experienced FB to block for Ronnie and Ricky. Peelle and Campbell seem like developmental guys to me. I do not know what kind of impact they will make right away.
On Defense: Allen (CB), Hill (SS), Hodge (LB), Goodman (CB).
It seems to me that Saban has already added THREE new DBs to a weak secondary. That is a very positive sign. Those guys will fit nicely with Daniels, Bell and Tillman. Hodge is a possible replacement for Seau.
So what is missing? If Miami is going to make anymore moves in free agency, it will probably be to get a backup QB. Another DB wouldn't hurt, but I do not think it is a priority. There is alot of talk about Arrington, but I don't think Miami will have the money left to get him. Personally, I think he is not a very good fit with Miami's current LB corp.
So what comes after the next few weeks of free agency? The draft. Miami has 3 big picks in the draft. They are in the first, third and fourth rounds. Of those three picks, one will definitely make an immediate impact. It is possible that two of them will make big contributions.
What positions will Miami draft now that we have seen the free agency moves? I think Miami will try to get a LB with the first pick in the draft. There will be alot of good LBs available in the first round. Saban may decide to take a DB if Williams is there. Other than Williams, I think Saban will go with an LB. In the 3rd and 4th rounds, I think Saban will get either a DB or LB (whichever he didn't get in the first round), and a WR.
