current situation with sammy knight?

Freeman is worth a third, especially to a team who has two. Look at the Saints, they want an immediate starter.

The image they get of Freeman is a young, versatile, and balanced safety who has a year of experience. That is the same I think of his as well, but we are basically getting a third for nothing as we are replacing our S very quickly with Knight.

I dunno dude. The pats want a 2nd for Tebucky Jones, and the Saints won't play ball. They only want to give a 3rd.

So, do you honestly think the Saints will offer the same compensation for Arturo Freeman as Tebucky Jones? Didn't Tebucky make the pro bowl?

Your not getting it though. There is no choice. If the Saints make Freeman an offer we either match it or take the 5th. There is no bargaining power here. There is absolutely no option to trade him higher

Well actually that is not quite the case. Often times teams will offer more than the expected compensation pick in a straight up trade, in order to ensure that they can land that player.

However, despite Jaj's opinion on Freeman's worth, I would guess that Freeman would warrant a 4th rounder (higher than comp) but no more than that in a straight trade. If the asking price rises to a 3rd rounder, it is likely that the Saints (or other interested teams) would take their chances on an offer sheet.

Sorry VanDolPhan, I misread your post. I presumed that you were saying that Freeman was untradable in any situation.

I have just returned from a wedding, a little the worse for wear, so my reading skills are not quite fully functional right now.

I think the fins are trying to get the seau deal done first then they will go from there

The Saints wouldn't give up a 3rd to insure they get Freeman, they have a lot of cap room, so they can give him a lot of money this year and then nothing in the future so that the Dolphins can't match the offer.

Think about it like this (this has already been posted): if the Saints will give a third for Tebucky Jones, why would they give the same thing for Arturo Freeman? Jones is one of the best safeties in the league, while Freeman is arguably one of the worst. You can't possibly believe the Saints would just give up the pick because they have more than one, they will try to get a good value for the pick and Freeman is NOT worth a third round pick.

Yeah Van dude, you really are wrong about the no possibility of trading Freeman for more than a 5th. Thats not true at all. The Dolphins are amid negotiations right now with the Green Bay Packers to trade Jermaine Haley to them for more than the 7th round pick that is his required compensation if we fail to match an offer sheet.

All we do is say to the team interested, hey...we're gonna match. No matter what. For a 7th round pick, we're gonna match because we're not losing him for a 7th. Now, if you offered us a 4th round pick, we would decide not to match and we could do a sign-and-trade which would not accelerate his signing bonus against our salary cap because it would be done on the same day.

There's no more Seau talks right now I don't think. I believe Demoff made it quite clear that given Junior's unwillingness to give up that $2.7 million bonus, and given the death of John Butler, nothing is going to get done before that bonus is due. And after that bonus is due, the Chargers won't unload him until June 1st because otherwise they take a very large cap hit...that is, IF they still unload him June 1st.

Can't Seau sign something to delay the bonus a few days? I think the Saints did something similar with Willie Roaf last year and they were able to deal him because of it.

The Saints were offering a third, a seventh, and a fourth next year. It is done and this whole thing may be irellevant with the Jones trade. It is good that they got rid of Jones though. Milloy is not that great of a coverman and Harrison is terrible covering.

Next year we will smoke their secondary. Nobody there has Chris Chambers speed.
