cut Bowens,thompson..sign law,schulters

Bowens is a tough call. He is in the prime of his career (He turns 29 on July 3rd), he had a good season last year, and he is in a contract year meaning he wil be motivated to play better than he ever has. His 7 sacks are more than Courtney Brown has ever had in a season. But its not 1.9mil worth of production. Schulters would be a nice addition but he is 31. Still in his prime but not for long. It would really depend on the contract with him.

we already have the cap room to sign schulters to a contract...as long as it's not more than 1.5 million. I've been b*tching about he safety position since before the draft and have been waiting since that same time for schulters to get cut (the rumors started as soon as the season ended for Tenn). I'm pretty sure we'll cut Quinton now....or at least we should. I hated the Tillman signing when it happened because he's always injured and what happens, before there is even any contact he has to have surgery. Now he's out drunk, drunker than Quinton, which is why he was driving (proved by the fact that the girl they were racing is the one who drove Tillman home). I hate to admit it but I'd rather have Brock back at age 36 than Tillman right now.

Ok, I'm done venting....I'm not saying we should run out and sign Marion. I just don't have any faith in our FS position. Back on point here...signing Schulters fixes that problem in my mind. Yes, Law helps at CB, even if it's a 1 yr rental but Schulters fixes a bigger need right now and we can do it without cuting either Bowens or thompson immediately.(although I have advocated trading Bowens since we drafted Roth)

I don't think we need to be secure about boston's situation before cutting Thompson. We have depth. I'd rather giving young guys as newson, gilmore, welker and davis, chances for the 3rd,4th and 5th WR spots. And we would be taking a potential starter S/CB over a 3rd (at best) receiver.

As for bowens, I like him though I guess he's not a lock to stay bc of HIS salary cap status. Again,we would be taking a potential starter S/CB over a solid backup DE. I'm fine with taylor, roth, holliday, flemons, carter can play there...and there are some 4 or 5 other young DE in camp trying to make the roster, I believe we'll find out one worth to keep, out of this "no name" group.

As for Law,it's fine having him for only a year. Poole is the future at CB anyways.

I'm all for it.

I was not a big Bowens supporter, but he does offer something that several of our other DEs don't...
He is best suited (in Saban's style of play) to become that standup OLB in certain situations...My guess, from minicamp accounts, is that he has caught Saban's eye as a potential asset. As a pure DE, opposite Taylor could be Holliday or Roth or Carter (if he's not playing DT). I think for his worth as a DE he is making too much money, but if he is versatile enough to play an expanded role in the defense...Saban may consider keeping him...

As for Thompson...I would celebrate the day he is cut or traded..he has NEVER done anything to impress me (save for one catch)...BUT....we can't really depend on Boston since he has proven to be unreliable, injury wise. Yes, he's doing and saying the right things now (and he did these same things last off season) but he has to prove it in the regular season for me to get excited about him...So..we may have to keep Thompson on, unless one of our younger guys gravitate to the top come TC...

Roth also can play olb in a 3-4, or DE in a standard 4-3. He played both in college.

Bowens may be looking good now, but he does have an injury bug (swarm?) and our secondary is very depleted. If releasing him freed up enough money to sign Shulters and either B. Taylor or T. Law I would be very happy

I agree that Bowens looks promising but we just signed two ends, drafted one, will switch to 3-4 , so many end s you need? He would be great for rotation, BUT he better is lighting fast in the face of the QB, since we do not have one solid safety to cover. The only guy worse than our SS is our FS.

So if it is necessary trade him / release him and get a safety

before we cut anybody I think we ought to see if we can find at least one more d tackle and one cornnerback and maybe look at the posibility of trading for another qb as well. i would not oppose to cutting several overpaid jokers.

I like Thompson, he CAN be a good #2 in a real passing offense.

what??

you do realize he can't catch, right? Besides the fact that he doesn't get seperation, isn't a great route runner, can't catch and doesn't have good speed I see what your saying.

Yeah cut Bowens, sign Shulters I wouldnt mind keeping Derrius 1 more year, besides we have plenty of cap space.
