The savings from cutting Frerotte are worth too much to hold onto him. We have to upgrade the QB spot and he needs to be gone. We also need to pursue Mawae and Adams and another WR if possible. Whether we actually sign those is still up in the air. But, the point is, we need to pursue those guys as well as be in a position to make a serious run at either Brees or Culpepper.
Either way, Gus' contract has to be jettisoned and some other deals need to be renegotiated slightly to make them more cap friendly.
Even with that, we won't be able to go crazy in free agency. But, I would go in this order:
1. Brees - his recovery will be quicker than Culpepper's (though Daunte is the better QB) and he is still much better than Frerotte. Btw, I've had almost exactly the same surgery that Brees did (torn labrum, partially torn rotator cuff and a bone spur, plus lots of bursitis cut away). My shoulder is much stronger today and it all dependes on how hard I want to work it.
2. Mawae - we need a center. A very good center, like Mawae, will be a huge factor in improving an already improving OL.
3. Adams, DT - stopping the run is a major factor in the NFL and he would really help us dominate here in combo with Traylor.
4. WR - to compete for #2 or fulfill a #3 spot. Some have mentioned Kelly Campbell from the interest there - that is a possibility. Though there hasn't been much talk to date, I'd love to see us take a run at Randle El. I think he could win the #2 pretty easily. However, Campbell is much cheaper and more realistic.
Of course, we still need help at DB (CB and S positions) and perhaps another O-lineman as well as more depth at LB. But, I think we can fulfill a few of those slots in the draft.
If we got the top 3 above and a competitive WR - I'd feel really good about our chances next year - assuming everyone remains healty.
