If I read the cap page, we would get about $200,000 in cap room from cutting him now. ($810,000 salary savings - $610,000 dead cap.)

I assume we would also have a $3 million cap charge next year from accelerating the rest of his signing bonus, but what do the base salaries look like in the rest of that contract?

Based on Clumpy's analysis, Howard's cap figure this season will be the same, whether he is on our roster or not.

Based on NFLPA's data, releasing him would result in a net cap hit of $1 million next year -- the $3 million of his signing bonus that would be accelerated minus the $2 million of base salary we would not have to pay -- as compared to a $2.75 million hit if he is still on our roster.

Therefore, I think Saban keeps him buried on our bench the rest of this year and then dumps him afterwards.

Yes the base salary for next year is $2 million. I looked at the wrong cell. That yields a $1 million cap savings if he is traded or release on or before 6/01/06.

It has to be an unusual situation for a Roster Bonus not to be a LTBE bonus and charged to Team Salary.

If Howard is released before the roster bonus and the regular season base salary are paid his cap charge is still part of Team Salary until he is released because at $4 million it will be part of the 51 highest contracts charged starting the first day of the New Year.

So his cap charge of $4 million comes off but then the dead money of $3 million is charged.

The net savings will be a little less because the 52nd highest salary would replaced Howard's and whatever that contract is in effect reduces the cap savings. It's usually in the $305k range.

An amortized bonus is never owed it is charged to Team Salary on a prorata basis, as it was already paid.

If Howard is released next year or traded there is a $1 million gross cap savings. Look at the computation where I made a mistake in base salary and add a million to the base salary.

A contract restructure reduces current Team Salary by moving the cap charge to the future. A salary reduction and/or an agreement to forgo a roster bonus reduces Team Salary.
