he has sent a few linebackers to the pro bowl when he was in san francisco like julian peterson. I see him more as a figure head really because I expect Saban to call alot of the plays on defense.

Ditto.

last years Detroits linebackers played well...i remember 2 years ago when he had a healthy Boss Bailey..he made him into a great linebacker

As far as linebackers are concerned though he has a great reputation. There is Julian Peterson as mentioned before but dont forget San Fran also had Derek Smith, and Jeff Ulbrich who are both underrated LBs in San Fran. Before that he also had Ken Norton Jr., Lee Woodall, Winferd Tubbs. Some great names there. Finally in Detriot he had Earl Holmes (although probably already pretty maxed out), Boss Bailey, Barrett Green (ended up getting an excellent contract to NY Giants this year). Bottom line is, as has been stated 6+ times, he is most likely a figure head but at least this guy has alot of success with whatever he does.

I'm going to have to disagree. Saban my decide what base defense to run (3-4, 4-3) but i don't see him calling the plays. Richard smith has been in the NFL for a while and i'm sure he wants to stay there and maybe even be a head coach. that's not going to happen if he stands around while Saban runs the show. no i think he is going to want to put his stamp on this defense and show NFL owners what he has to offer and try and advance in his career.

Smith and Saban have some history together...He was ready to move up to the next step and who better to do it with than Saban..the same things can be said about Wanny and JJ, Parcells and BB, BB and Crommel (sp), etc. Give him some time with Saban overseeing his progress and he'll be just fine...and if he isn't cutting it, Saban won't be too ashamed to let him loose...
