Dallas Thomas is horrible

I finally watched the game late tonight. Last week Dallas Thomas was churning his feet twice as fast as last preseason. Obviously somebody told him to focus on the footwork. Against McCoy there was no time for that and he was humiliated. Or should I say he rightfully should feel humiliated. Thomas still might consider it an improvement. After all, he's an NFL starter.

This is what I worried about with both Thomas and Turner, and emphasized it not long after the draft, that when they are beaten it is immediate and decisive. Turnstile Twins. Both play narrow and not particularly strong with shaky technique. At least Turner can move and looks like an athlete on most plays. Too bad he was never allowed an opportunity opposite McCoy. It might have been an avalanche but I have the feeling Turner would have displayed more fight than Thomas.

Jonathan Martin as a rookie didn't look too bad against lesser linemen but against top guys the athletic limitations were glaring. Very similar with Dallas Thomas at this stage. It looks like we drafted a borderline practice squad caliber talent in the 3rd round.

You had to question Thomas as a draft pick when he couldn't get on the field with a horrible line that was missing two starters

I never thought he was starter material in the first place. IMO he's a work in progress and he was thrown to the wolves lat year. I agree he looked horrible.

Thrown to the wolves last year...Good Lord he had 2 snaps all season
To the people who said, Our offensive line can't be as bad as last season"
welcome to reality

McCoy may be one of the better DT in the NFL, but Thomas couldnt even slow him down. Thomas couldn't even stand in his way. McCoy didnt overpower him or use some extraordinary move to get around Thomas, Thomas just whiffed. And then there was the offsides penalty - which should never happen for a guard with the ball in his peripheral vision. And there was a play where Thomas has a low block on the DT, and it should have been called for a chop. This guy officially sucks.

Why, because Thomas is getting abused?

He seems to be weak in the lower body....McCoy is good but that was a mismatch.

You can understand a great player making some plays now and then....but that was ridiculous.

As good as Cam Wake is....when's the last time you remember him dominating somebody like that?

Seems to be weak? I would like to add slow and no explosion! There is a point in the game I started to wonder if he was actually anchored in cement!

True enough.

I know this has been beaten to death but here are a few of my final sober thoughts.

Dallas Thomas is young and very inexperienced. Players can have horrible games without necessarily being horrible players. Perhaps he got unnerved the first time McCoy schooled him. Perhaps he was nursing an injury and wasn't quite right etc., etc. We tend to make way too many conclusions on this board based on unfairly small sample sizes. Just let the preseason play out and see where he's at then at the least.

I'm not sure what to make of Dallas Thomas. He looked decent in pass pro against the Falcons, still lacking in the running game. I haven't seen the Tampa game...I taped it early this morning so I'll get to watch it tonight but from the sounds of it he looked much like he did in last years preseason game when he looked like he had no business in the NFL. I don't recall him getting beat that often in the training camp reports though. I do know that if Gerald McCoy abused him wait till he faces Detroit and Ndamakin Suh, that should be ugly. If Dallas Thomas has another performance like this though I think it puts him on the bubble of making the team. Out of all the O-lineman we have Dallas Thomas has definitely had the worst preseason games.

Somebody watch the game again, key in on Thomas and then key in on Billy Turner when he goes in at RG.

if Billy Turner doesn't get a chance to start vs the Cowboys, I'm officially jumping on the "Welcome, Harbaugh" bandwagon.

Guys, it was NOT just Thomas. Colledge also got schooled by McCoy, the difference was that when Colledge got schooled, Thomas got schooled by someone else even worse and the TFL went on Thomas.

Bottom line...Thomas is not our only issue.

Another problem with Thomas is that sometimes he wouldn't block anyone on plays...not just that they beat him, he just flat out missed or didn't know who to block.

If we can just pick whatever coach we want why not Bill Belichick. We've got just as good a chance of landing him as we do Harbaugh.

YUP. Colledge and Thomas both aren't very good. The interior OL is a trainwreck right now. This is what really concerns me, that Philbin is starting guys who are marginally better at pass protection but can't run block their way out of a paper bag because he doesn't value the running game at all.

I don't know if its that he doesn't value the run game, or it is just difficult to rebuild a whole line in one offseason. Thanks Obama...(and Ireland...)

The problem is that we have guys on the roster who can at least bring something of value, and they are being buried on the depth chart. Shelley Smith and Billy Turner are GOOD run blockers. They aren't good pass blockers, but the honest truth is that NEITHER ARE COLLEDGE AND THOMAS.

Think about it. When Pouncey gets back, we could have three good run blockers in our interior OL. Or we could have one good run blocker and two guys who aren't good at anything.
