There is a lot of concern (understatement) on this board about Dallas Thomas. There are a lot of positive, supportive words coming out of the Dolphins Organization about him. I saw him play last year and watched him struggle, as did many others on this board. What I am hoping to accomplish with this thread is this:
I would like to pinpoint from people who know what it is exactly about Dallas Thomas that have contributed to his struggles, if they are correctable, and how long does it take to refine what is lacking?
For example, for people who have watched him play or have access to film/video of him playing, what is it exactly about Thomas's game that have caused him to have so much trouble? For example- is he not strong enough, is he too slow at the point of attack, does he not use his hands properly, does he play with poor leverage?
I am not a talent evaluator, but I love listening to people who understand technique, who have maybe coached, who see what the problems are and can identify them. What I hope this thread does not turn into is a bash session with responses like "he sucks" / "he's a turd". What I would like to know what it is that has caused his struggles, and what can be done to fix them. Dallas Thomas is such a lightning rod for abuse, and I get tired of hearing the blanket "he sucks" stuff. I'd love to know they whys.
Thank you to all who contribute.

In all due respect, this topic has been abused beyond beating a dead horse, and even beyond the glue factory. :)

Definitely poor leverage from what I have seen. Not very good balance, and very susceptible to bull rush attacks.

I agree his balance shows negatively for him all over the film.
His feet dont seem to move where he wants his body to go in space.
At guard he actually looked okay to me though..
I have no idea how he got more than 2 starts at tackle

Inability to anchor and hold his spot -- as others have stated -- OL play is a lot about leverage and this kid (so far) has not demonstrated a basic understanding of creating or maintaining leverage. Beyond that, he's plays "light" and seems filled with helium. I've heard he has a very high squeaky voice too.

I wonder the same...we once had Evan Mathis around here...and he sucked back then...now he's top 2 G in the league for the past few years. Would it be fair or possible to compare Dallas to Evan as far as limitations and possibility of the light coming on?

I'm no expert but he always struggles with power. He needs to hold his ground too weak

They drafted him with mindset and physical talent of Jonathan Martin. No punch, no aggression, no strength, and no fire.
Just a big lump of marshmallows

Could the reason Mathis didn't work out be that he didn't fit the scheme at the time? I believe we switched to the zone blocking scheme when Philbin became our head coach. I have been told that zone scheme fits are more rare than power blockers because of the required finesse
