Dallas Thomas ?

This staff seems to be very patient with rookie, and reluctant to give them significant playing time in their first year, it looks bad on Ireland right now but if they end up being very good year 3, then it was worth it... we`ll have to wait and see I guess...

Don't want to base everything on his interviews but the guy sounded as dumb as a box of rocks this pre-season. I wonder if he will ever mentally be able to grasp the NFL.

And Jeff Ireland pretty well sucks when it comes to making selections in Rounds 1-3

Why is it that NFL teams, and draft evaluators, take three years to evaluate a draft pick, and forums (for the most part) do not?

really? i couldn't disagree more with round 1.

jeff ireland's only three first round draft picks are:

1) Mike Pouncey
2) Ryan Tannehill
3) Dion Jordan

looks like jeffy is 100% there.

suck on that, haters.

(as for his second and third round picks: 2011 daniel thomas (no third round pick). see the pittsburgh game (with an injured ankle), still a miss by ireland.
2012 2nd round pick jonathan martin (possibly the worst pick ever made by anybody, lol). 3rd round olivier vernon (he is becoming a stud before our eyes. leads the team in sacks), michael egnew (project tight end, played a lot of blocking fullback this year of all things)
2013 2nd round pick jamar taylor (injury plagued rookie season) 3rd round pick dallas thomas (rookie, too soon to tell).

Grass hopper...
Because the posters here are all-knowing and much wiser than the GM who used to be a ball boy for the Chicago Bears. We can spot the bust pick within a single season.
The professionals do this for a living. They will never admit to their mistakes. Eventually, they get traded or cut with little fanfare years after the sting has worn off.

Great pick - Ryan Tannehill has exceeded most expectation. How much was his pick due to Shermin and Philbin? We will never know if this was Jeff's pick or not. He gets the credit though.

Solid picks - Vernon - steady progress and a very good player as a pass rusher. A liability on running downs.
Pouncey as a center has not been that great. I think he is serviceable, but he is not considered an elite center. He has some flaws in his technique. Might ultimately be better at guard.
Dion Jordan had flashed great talent and ability. He was a top 5 pick. Kind of hard to screw that up. He might be a great player or an average player. He has not played enough (why?)

Bad picks - Daniel Thomas, Jonathan Martin - anything else need to be said here?

Question marks - Egnew, Taylor, Thomas - these guys have either underperformed or not played for various reason

I would not call this great drafting in my estimation. Those high picks for Martin and Thomas were clearly bust picks. Ireland actually trading up for Thomas..just wow.
The questionable picks do not scream pro-bowl potential. At best they will be solid players. Mediocrity.

Olivier Vernon is a one trick pony and is simply NOT big enough to be a full-time starter. He's a pass rusherand a liability against the run. He gets washed out of far too many plays against the run. And Pouncey looks worse this year then he did last season. Tannehill is a middle of the pack QB. If and it's a big "IF" he becomes a franchise guy then he was worth the pick but he isn't there yet. I still think trading up for Dion Jordan was a big time reach.

I agree Thomas should stick to guard. Lots of us who were familiar with his play at Tennessee were shocked when Miami announced plans to use him at tackle.

Nobody is demanding that rookies excel as a block. Some of them should flash big upside from the outset, and we've fallen shy in that distribution lately. If they look overmatched as a rookie, like Thomas did in preseason, then you have to doubt the high water mark. We lack great players and the steady flow of moderate guys does absolutely nothing for this team. Thomas would have to improve by open lengths merely to be below average next season.

All those high picks last year should have produced at least one player that the league is scared of, someone who jumped in and looks like a sure fire long term star. Instead, we've got lots of guys who rarely if ever played and one lanky kid who lacks an ideal position.

I was having a pretty good Christmas and then get reminded of yet another Ireland blunder.

Ozzy rules!!

There are a variety of reasons why players could not play much in their first year or two, one of the main ones being that in good organizations players will be drafted to sit behind talented players for a couple of years. But when you have positions that aren't strengths, and reasonably high draft picks can't see the field above street free agents, there is an issue.
