As far as the kicking duel went vs. Jacksonville, do you guys think Carpenter helped himself keep his job, or hurt himself?

He started the game with a nice kickoff 3 yards deep in the end zone.
Later, he nailed a 40+ yd. FG.
Followed by another decent kickoff to the 2 yard line.

Then later, he SHANKS the PAT! granted, he was kicking off the infield dirt/mud... but still, you cant miss a PAT when you're fighting for your job. no matter the conditions.

I really cant tell... some nice positives, with a big negative.

Just curious what "feel" everybody got from the game.

We didnt see much from Barth, so its hard to tell

He slipped on the infield after a torrential downpour. I think he is fine.

Carpenter seems ok on field goals, I just worry about his kickoffs coming down on the 15 yard line.

Unless Olindo Mare aquires a time machine and travels back to 2001, I think his job is safe.

actually Mare was better than Carpenter overall last year 2008

MAre 24 of 27 no missed xp 66.6 yard kickoff average with 22 tbs 3 50 yarders made

Carpenter 21 of 25 no missed xp 64.1 yard kickoff average with 7 tbs 1 50 yarder made

There is now doubt that his leg stregth on kickoffs is questionable... But he had no problem sticking it in from 48 yards out... I think unless he gets hurt or has a complete meltdown in the rest of the preseason he will be our kicker...

With Barth as his competition I agree but I think he will have a short tenure.
7 tbs is not good. He was 24th among all kickers in TB;s tied with Jay Feeley.
He's basically a Feeley clone but much cheaper. Feeley in 2007 was much worse on kickoffs though with a 57 yard average which is a career low for him by a bunch. Neither guy is a good kickoff guy.

I definately won't argue with you about the short tenure in Miami... I would be surprised to see him next season... But I don't think there is anybody on the free agent market that could replace the accuracy on FG... Which right now is more important that Kickoff leg... We will probably try to get someone in the offseason that has both...

Distance is not always the telling factor on KO's. Sporano worked a lot with directional kicks last season to try to make up for horrible coverage. You saw one on Carpenter's 3rd KO, which landed around the 12 but close to the sideline. Hang time is also very important.

My question is why did they even bring in Barth?

I thought it was because Danny boy was struggling in camp and they figured some competition would help him pick it up. And the fact that the Chiefs got some rockstar rookie and let Barth go, so he's probably not that bad.
