Dan Carpenter still trying to figure out ‘Devin Hester Rule’

It *is* as simple as that. Other kickers are consistently better at kickoffs; Carpenter just doesn't have the leg. He can make all the excuses he want, but his leg simply isn't up to the task.

Carpenter just doesnt have the leg? dude kicked a 60 yarder! hows your leg doing?

Ok so based on your own source, my point stands. It is not as simple as that. Only 9 other teams were more successful at touchbacks then Miami last year.

Only 2 teams were over 30%

So let's look at it a differe way. I could be wrong on this specific # so if I am please correct me.

The end one is what? 10 yards correct? So if it was as easy as kicking it out of the end zone, that means that a kicker would have had to kick it 5 yards deep in the end zone consitantly last year.

What is the rule of thumb for a Returner? How far deep in th end zone are thy typically told to not return and kneel? About 5 yards deep.

So, with that said, It would be a decent argument to claim that those Touchback %'s are from kicking out of the end zone as well as kicking it deep into the end zone.

When only 2 teams were able to get 30% r more Touchbacks, It's not as easy as kicking it out of the end zone.

It's easy t make these claims as arm chair QB'S and because he is a Kicker it' supposed to be just that simple.

But when only 9 kickers did better, it's not fair to make those claims.

Plus, with your own source, it showed that on average, less then 20% of kicks were kicked far enough for Touchbacks.

Did this rule suddenly enable these kickers to increase how far they can kick a ball? Absolutely not. If you kick it 70 yards off a tee, you won't suddenly kick it 75 yards off the tee because of this rule.

The only part that is gonna truly impact the return game is the 5 yard run up for blockers

Alright, then why don't we evaluate average starting field position after kickoffs?

Football Outsiders actually compiles these numbers ("Kick" column), and as you can see, Miami is ranked 28th by that value, evaluating net yardage within kickoffs. That means that, considering touchbacks, directional kicks and other elements, we're among the league's worst in kickoffs.

Yes, that does consider coverage, which suggests that ours sucks. All the more reason to boot the gorram ball out of the endzone.

I couldn't kick a 30 yarder if you paid me. Then again, he does have a job as a *kicker* in the NFL, so I'm perfectly comfortable comparing him with his peers. I don't figure into the conversation.

As for using field goal performance when judging a kicker, please read this. Field goals are about the *worst* criteria when judging a kicker's future perfomance.
