Former NFL coach and Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Dan Henning has emerged as the leading candidate to become the Dolphins' offensive coordinator, according to two sources.

Henning, who has had head-coaching stints with the Falcons (1983-86) and San Diego Chargers (1989-91), is expected to succeed fired coach Cam Cameron as the director of the Dolphins' 28th-ranked offense (yards).

Interesting...

had a couple good years built around the power running game (with Stephen Davis, and then with Nick Goings of all people), had a really balanced offense for a couple years. Got fired cause his style did not fit Carolina's personel (Willaims and Foster are not power runners, and they could not find a good compliment to Smith at WR... or a compliment at all).

Definatly fits the type of offense we want to run, and when his offense was at it's best, it got a lot of people involved.

I wonder if Palmer would have been our OC if the Giants had lost

probably

So what's the story on this possible candidate? thumbs up or thumbs down? I have never heard of the guy

probably a better canidate than Palmer would've been.

I briefly touched on it in my last post, but here's a bit more of why I like him.

He took a Carolina team with Stephen Davis (who many considered done), and helped them get to the Super Bowl, and Davis had his best year under him. The next year, all 3 of Carolina's RBs got hurt, and he took back up FB Nick Goings and put up some pretyt good stats (Goings almost had 1000 yards, and was actually pretty dominating at times).

He tends to get a lot of people involved on offense. In Carolina, both Steve Smith and Mushin Muhammad had all-pro years under him. A Ricky Prhoel in the twilight of his career was a very good slot WR during their Super Bowl run, and became a solid starter the next year when Smith broke his leg. Kerry Colbert also had a very good rookie year under him. Used a lot of 2 TE sets, but did not use conventional sets, and also got the FBs involved in the passing game (and occasionally the running game).

Was let go because Carolina no longer had a power running game, physical ol, or good compliments to Smith.

Here's a quote I liked from Wiki:

"Henning had two stints as the offensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins (1981-82, 1987-88). He won two Super Bowl rings during this time."

I knew I remembered him from the Redskins but I wasn't sure in what capacity. Some people knock the 'Skins because those two SB seasons were strike years, but I always took it as a compliment that Shula & Gibbs could hold their teams together during a season of turmoil.

I think the Tuna weighed in heavily on this one.

he was HC at BC at one time

all these new england guys have me believing that we will draft Matt Ryan

Like i said in another forum he won't be going anywhere no matter how we do next year so it could add some stability/continuity for our offense for a few years. If he doesn't die on us. you know our luck. rv

He was with parrcells with the jets wasn't he? And with AL Groh on 2000. I liked him back then.

That is the nice thing about the staff that is being put together. Guys like Paul Pasqualoni, Todd Bowles and Dan Henning are good coaches, but likely won't be up for head coaching jobs any time soon. Sure you could run out and get a young hot shot, but next year you may be looking to replace him as he moves on as a head coach somewhere. I would rather know we have good coaches that will stay for awhile then get someone Garrett-like and go through what the Cowboys went through last week.

One thing I find interesting, is he was with Carolina when Steve Smith had some of his best seasons (he was injured 2004).

I think this could help Ted Ginn out a lot as well.
