Dan Marino: A Football Life

He was so great. Like, so so so great and WAY ahead of his time

It's my favorite episode of that show. Not that I'm biased. I remember it was the first episode of that particular 'A Football Life' season and I'm pretty sure it premiered before our season opener (which I flew down for) vs the new LA Chargers in that soccer stadium they had to play in.

That TD compilation was just what I needed on this toilet break! TY

Yep. It's the only armor chink anyone has on him.

It’s the only thing they THINK they have on him. But the reality is, there isn’t anything on him.

Because football is a TEAM sport. And unfortunately the masses of sports fans have been conditioned in such a way that they are unable to recognize the major differences between team sports and individual sports.

Proof is in the pudding in how seemingly most every player, former player, media member and fan brings up how many titles a player has won or how many rings they have when discussing their greatness (or lack there of) or place in the hierarchy of the greatest-to-date (notice, I didn’t say ”of all time”).

Many, many times I’ve outlined a detailed argument how football is different than other sports with less players on the field and also how they all differ from individual sports, so I’m not going to repeat it again.

I’ll just say it’s maddening how naive and ignorant many are on the topic. They talk about QB’s and star NBA players as of they are participating in individual sports.

We can’t even get consensus on who is the greatest tennis player to date because of all the various factors that go into consideration and that IS an individual sport with a lot more apples-to-apples comparisons to look at.

How the hell a thing be judged in a team sport with so many more variables, such as individual players having far less control over outcomes of games and seasons?

Whether Dan Marino was part of 10 titles or none — it doesn’t change how great of a player he was.

I’ve said it countless times. Had John Elway not been fortunate enough to be on 2 title winning teams late in his career once he was FAR past his prime and FAR past his time of being the catalyst and most impactful player on the team, it wouldn’t have made him any more or less of a player than he already was.

All those two SB wins did was make his more more accomplished. It didn’t suddenly make him a better player, except in the eyes of those that don’t understand what they’re looking at.

Same goes for Marino. Had the big game in 1985 somehow gone differently, it wouldn’t have made him better. Say the defense that day had their best perform ever and manage to hold the Niners to 13 points and the Dolphins won the game 16-13 …. all it would mean is that Marino and offense performed exactly as they did but got rewarded with a team trophy. Because the ‘team’ played better.

That’s it.
