Dan Marino has no lack of confidence in the Dolphins' ability to win very soon.

By Cameron DaSilva Feb 2, 2016 at 5:24p ET

Following a 6-10 season, there doesn't appear to be much promise surrounding the Miami Dolphins' organization. Ryan Tannehill disappointed last season and they now have a completely overhauled coaching staff lead by first-time head coach Adam Gase.

That hasn't dampened Dan Marino's hopes for his former team. The Dolphins have made the playoffs just once since 2002 and only three times since Marino was the quarterback. There is talent on the roster but there are also several holes to fill.

For Marino, however, he doesn't believe the team is that far off.

offseason is becoming Miami's superbowl season.. I mean free agency, draft and UDFAs, new coach, great expectations and excitements. 4 games into the season, the GREAT DEPRESSION.

I feel like you can say this about just about every team in the NFL aside from the eventual 2 SB teams, and those 2 are usually the teams that stay healthiest, have the best depth, and have the better coaching.
Miami lacks in all those categories, go figure.

The biggest hole on this team is miko. I doubt we could sign enough players to fill that Grand Canyon.

lol, remember when Ireland said "the draft is my Super Bowl." You can't make this stuff up.

Miami was close to being competitive when Sparano was fired. They had a defense, but no talented offensive playmakers to score TDs. (Marshall dropped too many TDs.) What they should have done was replaced Ireland because he did not like drafting offensive playmakers in the early rounds and brought in a coaching staff who would run something similar on offense and defense. The offense was fine between the 20s, but too often settled for FGs in the red zone due to a lack of playmakers. The defense was decent, but Nolan had a habit of going prevent at the end of close games and the opponent usually marched down the field for the winning score. With the right (or should I say competent) GM and coaching staff they would have improved quickly.

But no. Ross hired that bum Philbin and kept Ireland. Here we are, 4 years later, and the team has less talent overall than it did when Philbin was hired. Philbin and Coyle turned a tough defense into a bunch of non-tackling pansies. The offense can no longer consistently convert those 3rd and 1s by rushing. After 4 years the o-line is worse now than it was before. Philbin took a team that was close and made it worse. There is no way that they are close to being competitive after what the previous regime did to this team. Tear it down and start over would be the smart thing to do.

very long time, people obsess over qb, but its one of our stronger positions.

not a good roster... luckily we headhunted a top gm last month right? oh wait the puppet isnt a top candidate and has been around for 10 years of **** drafting!

Considering the AFC isn't very strong, I don't disagree. Not saying it will happen but if it did I wouldn't be shocked.

If Gase is actually the communicator & strategist that is reported then that IMO covers some (not all) holes on the roster.

A #1 CB, above average ILB, & OG and the phins are at least in the hunt for the WC.

A 3rd OT, replacement for Wake/OV, & a legit seam threat TE and who knows?

Why didn't you actually quote what Marino said? I think it comes across as a challenge more than a vote of confidence, and he hits the nail on the head. These guys have got to take care of their division opponents and start to play as though their pride is on the line. Getting into contention is nothing special in this league because teams bounce from last in their division to playoffs regularly. It all starts with being respectable, though, and these guys weren't this past season.

For clarification, I feel that when the games mattered these guys came out totally flat. Their biggest game of the year was arguably against the Patriots in New England. They were riding the momentum of a pair of high scoring blowouts, and they got totally dismantled and ripped limb from limb @New England. This criticism isn't just for the players because it has just as much to do with the coaching, and I believe Dan is speaking to everyone. Basically, you should never get blown out by a division opponent.

I feel that by contrast the Jets and the Bills always mess Miami up pretty good. Even when we beat them, we almost always lose a valuable role or impact player. It sucks, but those teams send a message.

Now to give these Dolphins some credit, they were respectable in that last game with the Patriots. This new coaching staff needs to build on that and keep it going.

There is zero excuse why a team that is near .500 can't become a winning team. It happens all the time in the NFL.

Miami honestly needs to screw their heads on straight and as a team say "enough of the same ol' bull****".

It's going to take a team effort to right the ship but it can be done. Whether they do it or not is on them.

What's he supposed to say? "Yo, we suck. We're gonna suck until this loser owner (who happens to be signing my paycheck) sells the team to someone who knows how to build a winning football organization."?

Somehow I'm not expecting that. So maybe more likely is something like "Yo, we'll start winning real soon, fans!" And big surprise, that's pretty much what he said.
