OK, it is apparent that our qb position is in shambles. I really believe that the near future (next 3-5 years) comes down to one question. What will daunte look like in 07. Joey is not the answer and Lemon will probably be a good backup. Our defense is still good but that window is closing fast to say the least.

I believe their are 4 genral scenarios with respect to daunte's health/play that are possible.

1) He regains all mobility and is the quarterback he was in 04.

2) He regains enough mobility and elusiveness to be effective running/moving out of the pocket, learns how to read defenses better and becomes a good pocket passer making him a great all around quarterback.

3) He cannot regain enough mobility and cannot "tweek" his game enough to be a pocket passer and thus has played his last down in the nfl.

4) Regains some mobility and pocket presence, enough to be a backup the rest of his career.

I'm voting for #2, I don't think that he can ever be as mobile as he was in 04 after a tri-ligament tear coupled with his age. I hope we draft a quarterback early and he sits behind an effective culpepper for a few seasons.

I think that this question will decide the future of the dolphins for the next 5 years or so and determine our transition out of the ZT & JT era. If we do not solve this problem next year (and I think it will take a rookie a couple) we would have to completely rebuild and are looking at another 5 years before we can be competitive again.

Thoughts? Votes?

well pretty much our season next year will be determined on how daunte bounces back from injury so theres no way i say that he wont be back to his 04 status

exactly...but next year he will be back to playing smarter, better football

I really think this latest surgery may have worked wonders for his knee. He says his knee feels way better than it did, the pain has gone away, and press people are pointing out how he's basically walking around without any noticeable limp for the first time...probably the first time since coming to Miami.

How are 1 and 2 different?

1 indicates he is fully mobile, dual threat to run or pass, regains his 4.55 speed and can gain "chunks" (15-30 yards) of yardage with his legs.

2 indicates he isn't as mobile but has average/above average mobility; able to elude rushers, slide in the pocket and scramble for firsts on occasion. 2 also indicates that he becomes a better pocket passer to compensate for his reduction in "explosive" running plays.

5) He regains some mobility, but still can't read defenses, avoid the sack, avoid the fumble, or win more than 50% of his games.

none of the above - its not the mobility i'm worried about, its the confidence and decision-making.

remember, he was playing crappy BEFORE his knee injury.

Yeah, but he gets his confidence from his mobility, and his decision making is bad when he doesn't have time. So if he is mobile he buys more time and makes better decisions, he has always been this way.

As for early 05, there were a lot of changes in the offense and just never seemed to get comfortable, however I think he would have that season eventually if not for the injury.

I'm really not trying to defend daunte, and I have always been concerened with his decision making, but I feel that when he was extremely mobile and could fight off defenders and had a decent line he was a great quarterback. Just hope he can get back to near that form otherwise we are in for another 5 years of mediocrity.

Mobility is going to be less and this is going to put stress on decision making and faster reads.Something he never had to develop because of his mobility.

SO the question is can some completly change their playing style and instincts in one TC and be successfull.I do not think so .Also with vince young and vick in the mix more teams are facing mobile qb`s now and getting used to containment.

So its very doubtfull....if you are going to taking a OL and keeping a FB and RB to protect your QB and give him time you need harrison and wayne type WR to beat double coverage .

What everone forgets is he is a heavier QB and off the bat i can tell you the knee does not heal well as he is bigger.See vince young he is good now but being big the first knee injury is going to slow them down as weight on a joint is very key.

The knee can improve but will the decisionmaking and the speed to make the decisions improve? Daunte was so bad he made Joey look good! Scary.
