The only reason I would hesitate in doing this deal is that we would need to pay Amari Cooper for 2020 onward after his fifth year option ends in 2019.
Currently we have Albert Wilson and Kenny Stills under contract for 2020. Are we likely to extend them? Too early to tell, but both players have had success in Gase's system and Wilson has been particularly impressive this season.
We've also got Jakeem Grant who has come along this season and become more involved in the team. He is under contract for 2019. Are we going to extend him? If so, at what price?
I could include Danny Amendola in this because he would need another contract in 2020, but he will be like 34 at that time and will probably be a cheaper veteran contract if we retain him at all.
Now I won't dispute that Amari Cooper has arguably more upside than any of this group, however acquiring him and extending him would likely mean the departure of some of these receivers in 2020 because we can't pay everyone. This is before taking into account any other extensions we need to make or any further additions through free agency or trade. For me, I would stick with what we've got because the receiving core is having success this season despite the lack of a true number one receiver. We can always target a big bodied receiver and true number #1 in next year's draft and if we do that we get them at a fraction of the price it would cost us for Amari Cooper, and the benefit of that is we can then potentially hold onto some of the players above come 2020.
