I saw the Rosenhaus piece on WSVN last night as well- I don't like Jeff Irelan, but he at least got this one right and didn't pay a career backup QB stupid money:

1. There's no other logical conclusion to make than the Dolphins didn't think Matt Flynn was a franchise quarterback.

General Manager Jeff Ireland didn't think so, anyhow. Did Joe Philbin, who worked four years with Flynn in Green Bay, have the same idea?

You have to assume - and assuming anything about the Dolphins is risky these days - Ireland and Philbin sketched over the Flynn situation in their interview and have talked in-depth about their options in recent days. And you have to, ahem, assume again they came to the idea he's a big gamble.

You have to assume all this because Flynn's contract with Seattle isn't daunting at all. It's what a team would want to protect itself against his two-start career. Essentially, it's a two-year deal where he'll make between $13.25 million and $16 million, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King, who has been in contact with Flynn's camp throughout this process.

So Flynn makes between $6.6 and $8 million a year. Kyle Orton signed for $5.9 million to be Dallas' back-up. Chad Henne signed for $4.1 million to be Jacksonville's back-up. That shows up the money Seattle paid for Flynn isn't much and, again, is a two-year tryout window.

It's not the money. It's not because the job isn't open. It's not because they don't have enough information on Flynn. Again, the only logical conclusion is the Dolphins didn't want him.

If Flynn goes on to have a Top-10 career, he goes down with Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees as could-have-beens. If he goes on to being a back-up, this furor is similar to the cry for Kyle Orton (I was in on that) and Brady Quinn ( I wasn't on that).

Here's the disconnect on the Dolphins' thoughts and actions: Why did the Dolphins bring in Flynn at all if they didn't like him? Why fly him to South Florida? Why interview him for six hours or so? If they didn't view him as significantly better than Matt Moore - and their actions show they didn't - why waste everyone's time?
Only possible answer: To throw people off the scene of who they want. Who is? Good question.

2. Alex Smith has more experience but as many questions as Flynn.

He comes with similar, who-is-he? questions that Flynn did. He looks like nothing more than a stop-gap while the Dolphins prepare their quarterback of tomorrow. Whoever that is in the draft.
My guess is the Dolphins want Ryan Tannehill. Again, they have more information on him than anyone. And, again, they passed on an obvious candidate in Flynn. For that to happen, you want Tennessee to get Peyton Manning. That would free up Matt Hasselbeck, who could sign with Cleveland and assure the Browns wouldn't draft Tannehill.
That's the dream scenario for the Dolphins and Tannehill. But Hasselbeck also could sign with the 49ers in that situation.

OK. I understand the logic, but from a PR standpoint, you don't bring in a David Garrard. You stand pat.

I will say it once again. If we truly didn't have any interest in him and believe he could be our starting/franchise QB, then why did we waste our time bringing him in for an interview and make a contract offer??? I know the OP is just posting what was reported, but my response is to those who are trying to sell this story. Sounds more like we were interested, but were trying to save some bucks in the process and got called on it.

So the only possible answer as to why we went through this big charade of bringing in Flynn and wasting all this time in interviewing him when we never wanted him to begin with, was to throw people off the scent of who we actually want? Lol. Nonsense

Sounds like that to me too. Or heaven forbid he actually decided he'd rather play in Seattle rather than Miami. Shocking huh?

My guess is that they thought Flynn "might" be better than Moore, and the Dolphins wanted the two to battle it out for the starting job...unlike what he was promised by Seattle.

They knew Flynn was looking to be the starter and get paid starter money. They knew he would never accept stipulations where he would have to beat out Moore and come in on the cheap. If this is what they truly believed than they would never of wasted both sides times since flynn would never accept those conditions.

Same reason you bring in any F/A you are interested in...SERIOUSLY....There is no reason NOT to bring them in if you think they MAY be able to help the franchise in anyway...yes, we were interested, but not interested in paying him starter money when all he was going to do was COMPETE with Moore to determine the starter...If Flynn was rated that much higher than Moore, they would have paid him like a starter and handed him the keys to the offense...what about that DONT you people understand?

I believe they told him he would have to compete with Moore and maybe despite being told a similar thing he Seattle he though his chances where better there. Everyone here said they would trust Philbin on this so we have to assume he was not all in.

What is wrong with a QB competition were both QBs are on equal footing? And from what Ive read...he is still going to "compete" in Seattle but lets be honest...T Jackson isnt that great of competition.

Exactly but it is easier to throw blame at the FO when in the end he just was not what they wanted as their QB.

The title implies Hyde has some insight, but he even admits he's just assuming. Pretty misleading.

What don't you understand about several comments and articles stating that we weren't really interested in Flynn. The stories we are commenting on is concerning this PR attempt of somehow saying we weren't really interested in him and that by us letting him walk to Seattle. THE POINT was that if we really didn't have an interest in him, and we knew all about him from Philbin's experience (which has been pointed out numerous times), and we would have known what he wanted for $$ by just talking on the phone to his agent, why waste everyone's time for an extended interview and contract talks and deal with a PR nightmare with your fanbase, if you had no real interest in him? Anything else I've heard as a counter then leads me to believe we did have an interest, but at the right price. ?????? So we thought he might have been the answer if we could get him cheap? We want a frachise QB at bargain price of a backup LG.

Or maybe after meeting with both teams he decided he like Seattle more. He's going to Seattle to be the starter and please show me some concrete evidence that we told him he was going to compete and that we in fact lowballed him because we thought that was his real worth. I saw one pft article that was written before the interview. The same sources who are bashed when they write a negative phins article.

It's a big assumption that seems to be considered a fact by alot of apologists here

I don't know, but I think it's possible that this was a big smokescreen. Judging by the comments that Flynn's dad made, I do buy the notion that Miami pretty much just wasn't that interested in him.

At this point, I have two options:

1. Assume that everyone inside the Dolphins organization is an incompetent buffoon.
2. Give them the benefit of the doubt until the draft and then assume that everyone inside the Dolphins organization is an incompetent buffoon.

I don't fault anyone for taking option 1, honestly, but I really got nothing to lose by going with option 2 at this point.
