I had been afraid that Bess might get left behind in the WR race. Looks like he's worked hard to stay ahead. Go Davone!

Oh no, trust me I think they realize that Bess is the best WR on the Dolphins roster. Ted Ginn can still end up the best...because of what he can do to a defense when the ball is not getting in his hands (something that has been an attraction since before he was drafted). But, Bess is the guy that will get his hands on the football more and make plays.

Tony Sparano recently was asked if he thought that there was a #1 WR hanging around on the roster somewhere. He thought about it, and usually you ask him something like that and he'll hedge with all the "one way or the other" and "see what we see" type of stuff but after thinking about it for a bit he just said, "Yeah, we think we do." He said that they have a couple of guys in mind that could potentially end up that guy, but that he wouldn't say who. In my mind, that's proof that they believe that Ted Ginn and Davone Bess both have the chance to be #1 receivers. There may be another guy on roster that they think has that potential, maybe Pat Turner? But at the very least they think Bess and Ginn do.

How did this guy go undrafted? For this, he will always be linked to Welker- as he wasn't drafted either.
Not sure about him being a number one WR, he is short and not lightning fast (quick yes, long striding fast, no) but he surely brings something in the way of body control and quickness. He is the epitome of under dog and i think he enjoys that label. Remember him dragging like 4 Raiders five extra yards after the catch last year? OMG!

It's probably just a case where the Dolphins don't really have a guy that can combine physical prowess with the same control, technique and hands that Bess has...and so Bess looks like he could be a #1 to us but what we really need is a guy that has the full package. There really aren't that many of those guys out there, though.

It may be only because of his size but I don't ever see Bess being a #1 go to guy. Yes I know Steve Smith is about the same size as Bess but Smith also has SPEED. I like Bess, I think he's a good WR and hope he can and does dominate the league but I'm not overly optimistic about it happening.

I was looking at Bess upper body, man his arms have gotten big..I think he can fight off any attempt to jam him at the LOS...I don't know if he's gotten faster this year, but his speed last year did get him behind a couple of DB's and I'm sure that also had a lot to do with his route running..

yea but the boy did murder ed reed in the open field...may not b the fastest but his combined quickness power n drive keep him as a possible num 1wr

Good point. Bess looks like he has his head on straight and is a tough player. You never see him over celebrating or taunt anybody. I like that and its rare for a WR to seem so humble

humble? he caught 550 yards last year yes.. he was undrafted but he doesnt have much smack to talk.. i like bess but to say hes humble??? that doesnt even make sense

isn't 550 yards for an undrafted rookie like 2nd best of all time? i think only Wayne Chrebet was better and he turned out decent IMO. think about it like this, didn't Ginn have sub 200 yards his rookie year? i think we have a real keeper in Bess, no matter if he's the #1, #2, or #3 guy.

I don't see Bess ever being the number 1 WR only because he will not be able to stretch the field with speed. However, I do see him being the guy teams will gameplan for. He will and is a game killer. With his quickness, hands and great route running( a lot like Welker) he will keep Defensive coordinators up many nights trying to figure out how to stop him.

Why wouldn't that make sense? Is there a yardage requirement that you have to hit to be able to be called humble? I don't even know why you brought up stats because you can be humble and suck, and you can be humble and be the best in the game at your position.

Bess has always been a respectful, humble football player, it's not surprising Parcells was interested immediately after the draft.

He was something like the third most productive rookie receiver in the entire class. He's onto something. What I saw from him late in the year, if he continues that, he's onto something. He's the kind of guy that might not be flashy but is integral to winning games and winning championships. Deion Branch was never a flashy guy but in some of those Super Bowls, the Pats were awful glad to have him (21 catches for 277 yards and 1 TD in his two Super Bowl appearances). Similarly, Wes Welker is not flashy and all of us here, I don't think any of us think of him as an elite level receiver, and yet when the Pats got to the Super Bowl again...who are they relying on in the clutch? Welker with 10 catches and 103 yards.

And it's not just about what Bess does when he gets the ball thrown to him. It's about what he does when he doesn't get the ball thrown to him, too. He's a pretty damn tenacious blocker. He is part of the reason we averaged such good yardage around left and right end.
