DB situation - what to do?

I was thinking about the DB situation for '06, which ultimately has to be viewed as the achilles heel of the '05 Dolphin defense. I am curious what serious fans here think might happen. I, for one, feel like Poole & Daniels will be 1 & 2 at CB next year. I feel Daniels will improve next year over a very respectable rookie season. Poole, IIRC, is probably a more talented CB than Daniels. I fell in love with Y. Bell at safety this year. The guy just made big plays when we needed them. The same can be said about Schulters, although I like Bell better, as he seems like a harder hitter, which is what Mia has lacked for several seasons at the DB position.

I guess what I'm saying/asking is... with the exception of improving Nickel & Dime DB's, does Miami REALLY need to do much of anything with DB personnel, provided Poole is healthy? I'm saying all of this assuming Madison won't be back, so humor me and make the same assumption in your reply. If anything I would say draft a high level safety or maybe get a free agent.

this system takes a lot of time to develop. Like Zach said, we leave our corners on islands. They need to learn that they will have to fend for themselves in a blitz heavy scheme.

Think about it. All sam has ever known is that he covers the front and the safety will watch the back. Now he has to cover the front, back, and side. Our secondary is also affected by the Blitz. If there is a blitz they should only have to hold their coverage for 3 seconds. But if the blitz gets picked up they need to keep covering for another 2-3 seconds. In football time thats forever. The secondary got better at the end of the year because the front 7 got better at getting to the QB. Over half our sacks were in the last 6 games. If the front 7 dont get pressure, then the secondary is doomed to take the fall.

What saban will do is just keep it up. Sam will prolly leave, unless saban feels that any new guy will take to long to season.Regardless expect him to pick up guys that prolly wont start next year, but will be ready when the vets ahead of them begin to fall off.

But remeber that its not just the guys in the secondary who are at fault for those big plays....

I wouldn't mind the Dolphins drafting a guy like Michael Huff to play safety. He could team up with Bell at safety and then have Daniels and Poole as the starting cornerbacks. That wouldn't be a bad starting secondary. Also, they have Mitchell at cornerback too and Saban is high on him. He could be the 3rd cornerback next year.

:yeahthat:

Madison and Howard will be cut. Poole, Daniels and Mitchell will be our top 3 corners. they are our young guys, Saban will teach them (DBs are his speciality) and they will get some on the job training.

we would be better off because Poole is just as fast if not faster than Madison, Mitchell runs a 4.3 and Daniels would already be improved from last year

the changes will be at the safety position, I don't think we can afford what Schulters will be asking for to re-Sign him and both him and T.Jones might not be on the team next year. that is the main place we lack speed and we will draft Huff in the 1st which will take care of one safety spot

i believe we have the personal for corners on the team already with poole and daniels, with lance and bell i wouldn't mind that at all, because once we get a real DC in town he will have them run their strenghtens, my question is linebackers, and yes linebackers.

Poole has yet to show he can start and play well. He is coming off a blown out knee, which often takes TWO YEARS to fully heal. Poole may be no better than 90% in 2006, learning a new system, and we should rely on him being the #2 CB?

Depth, depth and more depth is very important in the secondary. Miami should try to get a solid vet CB, keep Madison if he decides to redo his contract (and though he has said he won't -he may change his mind) and draft a guy early. I'd have no problem with getting Huff if he was still there at #16.

BTW, Howard needs to go, if that even needed to be said.

I disagree here that we have the talent at DB in house. Assuming Madison and Howard are gone we have a need for a #1 DB. Poole is unproven and who knows how he will perform in this system. Daniels will continue to learn but is not a #1 DB now. We need another top DB IMO. Don't forget we play alot of 3 and 4 DB sets so we need a really good #3 DB which could be Poole or Mitchell. I'd love to see Brian WIlliams from Minny. He is a UFA and played great there. Might cost a bit but we need to upgrade the secondary. I'd have to believe either a high draft pick or a higher end FA gets picked up for DB.

No way we take Huff in the 1st. I dont think he will be on the board when we pick and even if he is i dont think we take him.

i think we need to go after one free agent corner (prob not clements..overrated and expensive) adn also draft one in the third or fourth. Cromartie might still be available in the third but i wouldnt mind drafting him in the second if his stock keeps rising. there are alot of underclassman secondary coming out for some reason so i think we can get young talent in the later rounds and use our first rounder on cutler

who are some other free agent corners?? oh, and i think we can definately and should definately resign schulters he is a great player, fits very well in the system, and is a leader to groom our young talent(bell, daniels, poole)

Care to tell us why? He is an outstanding player.

Nate Clements, Charles Woodson, Brian Williams, Jerry Azumah, Ty Law. Those are the UFAs that I can remember (Law has a clause in his contract that he can walk after one year, and he will likely use it considering his strong season and the new Jets coaching staff). And then theres some possible cap casulaties like Fred Smoot or Antoine Winfield, Brian Kelly etc. Those are just some rumored potential cuts.
