Source: #Dolphins are hiring former #NFL DE Andre Carter as assistant DL coach.

A former Pro Bowl defensive lineman will be coaching defensive linemen in Miami.

Andre Carter will become the Dolphins’ assistant defensive line coach, Adam Caplan of ESPN reports.

Carter had been expected to join the Dolphins’ staff, even though his only experience in coaching is a year as a volunteer at his alma mater, Cal.

But Carter has plenty of experience playing on the defensive line: He spent five years in San Francisco, five in Washington, two in New England and one in Oakland, was a college All-American in 2000, the seventh overall pick in the 2001 draft, a Pro Bowler in 2011 and finished his career with 80.5 sacks.

Very cool that Gase is also giving guys like this a chance. Andre Carter was a great player, but absolutely zero coaching experience is pretty fresh. I love Gases confidence. He just knows what he knows and he isnt worried about anyone else. If he sees talent it doesnt matter of hes unproven, he will show them the ropes and help them reach their potential. That's the great coach mentality.

When you look at the team through aqua colored glasses every move is awesome. However, I don't own a pair of those glasses. The D-line has been trending down ever since Kacy Rodgers left to be DC of the Jets. His replacement, Terrell Williams, has been underwhelming. Now we're hiring a guy who was a volunteer at the college level for 1 year. I'm not impressed or excited about this move. The defensive side of the ball needs all the help they can get and every advantage they can get, this is not a move that does either. You want to give a guy a shot to coach, give him a chance and get some on-the-job training fine but not on a unit that so freakin awful. 29th ranked defense overall, 30th against the run. In 2011, Sparano's last year, we were 15th in total defense and 3rd against the run...we've been trending down ever since.

Aqua glasses or not, truth is none of us know how he will do. One could expect reasonably that somebody as good as he was on the line might be able to coach it as well. If he has the passion to, why not? Assistant is probably a great way to try him out and see what he's got. I'm sure Gase has a better feel for what he is capable of than we do right now. Low risk here.
