DEBATE: Is Vontae Davis living up to his draft status?

Is Vontae Davis living up to his draft status?

Are we talking about his draft status, or subsequent hype? I'd expect a solid starter out of a late first round draft pick. Davis is certainly living up to that. However he is not living up to the hype as him being one of the top CB's in the league. Davis can be so much better, and while he is underachieving, I'd still choose him in the late first round.

He never should have been the pick in the first place. The Phins were desperate for a WR and Nicks was sitting there. Every team in the NFL is desperate for pass-rushers and Clay Matthews was sitting there. This isn't hindsight either - plenty of people wanted the Dolphins to draft Matthews or Nicks in the run-up to that draft - it was a surprise that both were available at the time.

Fact is, the front office out-smarted themselves again by picking Vontae Davis. There were rumors of "character concerns" with Vontae. Maybe unfounded. Either way, this front office thought we're going to prove they could take a guy that slipped because of character concerns and "coach him up" and turn him into a player. It was a bonus to them that his brother played in the NFL, and knew the ropes (sound familiar?).

Another front office failure.

At the time Miami was not desperate for a pass rusher..Joey Porter was coming off a very good year and we had Jason Taylor back. Wr was an extreme need so I cant argue with you there. In hind sight Miami should have taken one Wr in the first three picks that they had...Two Cb's and Pat White were the picks..didnt turn out well..Granted we have two starters but Smith and Davis are average corners at best..not worth their draft slot

You can NEVER have enough pass rushers. Both Taylor and Porter were older at the time. It is short-sighted thinking to say you pass on Clay Matthews because you have Jason Taylor & Joey Porter winding down their careers.

As I said, every team in the NFL needs pass rushers. Not matter how many you have, if one falls into your lap, you draft him. Just an example...remember, the Giants beat Brady because they were able to consistently pressure him with fresh pass rushers. They had Tuck, Osi, etc. And last year, they still drafted Jason Pierre Paul.

vontae is still quite young. Remember he was only 20 years old when he was drafted

you'll see just how much this team misses vontae now that he's probably gonna miss time with what looked like a sprained knee...sean smith as your #1 cb might work against cleveland and those garbage wrs but it won't work against san diego and on and on...

you'll see

1 catch ?!? Lol wat games did u watch
Nice ill-informed post. Can you cite me specific examples of Sean Smith allowing receptions? If you cannot, I wouldn't attempt to hold a debate with someone.

Overall he is a good player. I like him and he is the best DB on the team, however I am getting a little sick of him giving up at least one 40 yard pass per game.

that catch down the seam by andre johnson...there's nothing any cb could have done on that play...johnson just made a rediculous andre johnson like play

He had perfect outside hip coverage. If anything that play was on Jones, who bit on the play-action.

Finheaven is out of control. Is Vontae a legitimate starting corner? Yes. He would start on any team in the league right now (cromartie/vontae debates sure to ensue). A first round pick does not have to be top 5 at his position.

Yup. Just a combination of an amazing throw and a great catch. Couldnt have much better coverage one on one like that. The throw just had to be perfect and was.
