There is one preseason game left, one more chance to form conclusions and finalize roster decisions. But it’s also now time to focus on what’s most important: Getting ready for the New England Patriots.

We are less than two weeks away from the season opener. There is a lot to prepare for. I’m guessing – just a hunch – that the vast majority of the game plan is already in place. Why, knowing Joe Philbin, he might have had a few assistants working on it about two hours after the schedule came out. Wouldn’t put it past him.
But the game plan is one thing; getting his players ready for a multitude of imposing challenges is another matter entirely. You think Tom Brady is already thinking about the Dolphins? You bet he is.
So, in my humble opinion, everything that happens from here on out – the practices, the meetings, the tape studies, the brainstorming sessions – will all have the Patriots in mind. Up until now, it’s been about finding answers, evaluating 90 players and introducing a new offensive system. Now, we take things to another level. Now, there is one singular undeniable purpose: Preparing for 1 p.m. on Sept. 7[SUP]th[/SUP].
So in light of what happened Saturday night against Dallas, in light of the roster decisions being made as I write this column and in light of the urgency of preparing for New England, I offer you an assortment of Monday morning opinions.
• No announcement has been made on the starting offensive line. But I like what the starting five did against Dallas and, in my mind, it appears likely now that this is the group we’ll see against the Patriots.
• If the Dolphins don’t have the league’s best back-up quarterback in Matt Moore, he is certainly in the conversation.
• The deep ball problems between Ryan Tannehill and Mike Wallace remain a legitimate concern. Tannehill absolutely must improve that part of his game. The missed long ball connection against Dallas serves as yet another example.
• Whether you are talking about Damian Williams with an “a” or Damien Williams with an “e” they both have surprised a lot of people this summer. Does one D.W. make it? Does both? Some difficult decisions await.
• I’m not convinced yet that the Dolphins will have a consistently good running game, but I do feel a lot better after watching Knowshon Moreno break tackles and find small creases against the Cowboys.
Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon can be scary good together.
• Too many special teams problems surfaced against the Cowboys. Needless to say special teams coach Darren Rizzi has a busy few weeks ahead of him.
• I’ve seen enough of second-year cornerbacks Jamar Taylor and Will Davis to know this: Both are vastly improved and both will contribute a lot this season behind starters Brent Grimes and Cortland Finnegan.
• Like I’ve been saying all summer, cutting down this deep group of receivers will be one of Joe Philbin’s most agonizing challenges.
• Will a healthy kicker please step forward? And soon!
• So the preseason ends Thursday against the Rams. And then all thoughts can turn to New England, a season opener that will tell us so much about this football team.

both Damien Williams should make the team and I hope to see more Landry in the offense and less him returning. the Williams brothers (I know theres no relation) can handle returns

The Dolphins having the potentially best back up QB is so Dolphins in my lifetime! LOL

This. I am having a hard time watching Landry doing the return duty thing, you know the Patriots are aware of how high his potential could be, and will be looking to lay as many hard hits on him as possible...don't want him returning kicks, the risk far far outweigh the reward.

i dont know what MADMIC's actual meaning is here, but, if its "best finz backup qb ever" than DON STROCK gets that nod.

and i was around for EARL MORALL, old enough to understand the game at that time when he was with the finz. earl saved that season, no doubt, and COULD have even went the "perfect" distance. but, different era and different style. the run game of the finz was probably the best all around run team ever. you absolutely had to keep guys close to the line on defense to slow it down [you couldnt stop it]. and left a LOT of easy money for the finz qb's.

don strock could have won with his arm with MUCH less of a run game. i really wish he would have gotten a chance somewhere. even dan marino has said over and over, it was a crime he never got a starting job, in miami or elsewhere. he's as good as just about everyone else in the nfl at that time.

we will never know how that would have went, but, i can say with a straight face that he was the "better" all around backup. morall played with a team FULL of hall of famers or guys who should be and the best run game ever. i dont think earl could have gone to ANY team in ANY scheme and been a winner.

don strock and his arm could have been successful in many teams and schemes. and i am talking over a long period of time, not just a handful of games.

my opinion of course, but being a fan and student of the game, seeing both qb's over the years, strock is tops.

MATT MOORE: never had a team like the one he has had this year. he was a victim of the numbers game in his first nfl team and then was a victim of two other team's staff clean outs that he got caught up in. new coaches and gm's want THEIR guy and moore hadnt been with either of those two teams for more than a season and one of those not even a full camp. he didnt have aprayer to stick around and he had some pretty damn fine moments on that crappy lions team.

he is not the "had every chance in the world" qb people make him out to be at all. and the teams he has had since being here in miami havnt been any good and featured bad, bad offenses that NO qb could be successful in consistently.

why does he look so good now? he FINALLY has a good team. bill lazors offense and MUCH better all around wr help. and so far, better pass blocking.

moore is a good qb. much better than most think. he has a wrinkle or two but in this system and being under bill lazors tutelage, those will get ironed out. best backup in the nfl? i dont know about that yet, but, i wouldnt be surprised if thats how it is. and PROBLEM WITH THAT? something has to be wrong with the starter to find out if he is that good.

two edged sword.

I'm probably jinxing him here but how often do returners get hurt? Even the human toothpick Ginn has done it for years without getting dinged.

Well, considering the amount of crazy puishment they tend to at times take, I'm not exactly good with a receiver that could be special take a huge shot as he is concentrating on a kick/punt with insane hangtime. I guess I will just cross my finger.
