I am one of those people that won't watch any highlights of a dolphins game or read the news until I can watch the game in full. Since I am out of market, I was able to watch the game for the first time last night on the NFL network.

In regards to chad's arm strength, of which, we were told he was adjusting his throwing motion somewhat to use his back along with his arm. Upon the first viewing of the game last night, I thought that throw to Ginn after he completely beat his man was under thrown and thought immediately that it was because of Pennington's weak arm. Well after slowing it down and watching the replay, chad was about 3 yards into the endzone and threw the ball to the 40 yard line; roughly a 43 yard pass. Well that is nothing in today's game as guys should be able to throw 50+ yards no problem.

If you really take a look at the throw, chad does NOT step into the throw at all. It appears he winds up to throw as the pocket begins to be pushed back into his face. I think it is the guy that Long was blocking or Smiley that ended up with his arm up right in the face of Pennington as the ball was released. This "appeared" to cause Chad to short arm his throw and basically use his entire arm strength and NOT any of his leg drive or back. As a result the ball goes up and float and the end result is what we saw. Clearly Ginn could of had a 99 yard or whatever touchdown had that ball been thrown more up field and about 3 feet in front of him.

Just an observation as we still have much to see from Pennington this offseason. I don't think we really got a good view of what is to come potentially last night. Kind of had an odd feel to the game but then again it is pre-season.

The starting defense looked great and man let Wake get down in a 3 point and bring it....

agree with everything you say and we didnt win 11 games last year by throwing deep bombs. We won with smart efficient offense, and a good defense. This year were going to win with a strong running game backed up by an efficient passing game and a dominating defense that shuts down the run and brings the heat on pass plays.

Chad Pennington has plenty of arm strength. Is it the best in the league?!.. of course not. Do all of his positives greatly outweigh the fact that he doesn't have Matthew Stafford's arm? Heck yes, they do.

Chad Pennington is playing for his job, his legacy; he's playing to win a Super Bowl. This is going to be another special year, Dolphins fans. Let's enjoy what #10 has to offer!

I saw the same thing. I actually thought there seemed to be more zip on his throws than last year.

well remember the flea flicker against Seattle last year her threw it like 55+ on that one.

But he is a master between the number up to 20 yards and i rather have 10+ play drives where we never face a long third down. And owning the clock which we win when we have more TOP.

If it was Henne yes its probably a very long catch or a TD... BUT with penny a 99 yard drive will take a few more plays but we still move the ball efficiently.

But good job looking into it Penny is our Qb and if your only reason for him not to be is his arm strength then be quiet and just watch.

Nothing against Chad P, but I would like to see Ginn in full stride under a deep ball.

i guess there is a silver lining in pennington's throws..... ginn is learning how to adjust to the ball in the air. i was right on top of that play and ginn had his man beat with plenty of space to spare...... the deep ball isn't going to be a serious part of our offense with pennington in there, but he can throw a good enough ball to make the d somewhat respect it. that flood play where he hit ginn on a crossing route was a thing of beauty though.......

That's the thing about Pennington's arm. If he has a ton of time to step up and pass then he can throw a solid deep ball. What he can't do is make a split second decision and launch a ball up like other quarterbacks can.

Henne has a better arm everyone gets that but who's to say he even makes that read or is accurate with the throw. If Henne was the only thing from making our offense explosive don't you think he'd be the starter!

and everyone wonders why Ginn isn't being utilized the man can flat out burn many or the corners in this league.. but if his quarterback cant get him the ball without him having to come back to it then there's no way hes going to play to his potential and it makes pennington look else where. look at his college games he is ridiculously ahead of the corners obviously he wont be that far ahead but he still burns them and has to come back.. its simple if u want to use ginn get a strong armed quarterback..

I completely disagree with this. I watchd it frame by frame and you can definitely see Pennington step into his throw. You can see right after the play-action fake, Pennington turns around and strides into his throw. What I cannot determine is how much that defenders hand being up altered Chad trajectory on his throw.

no doubt about it

I am one of Chad's biggest fans, he is my guy no doubt, but he should have hit Ginn on that play. Does that mean he shouldn't be the Dolphins starting QB and that he can't lead us to a SB? No, of course not, but it would be nice to see him hit Ginn in stride on that play. He has done it, but for some reason more times than not he comes up short. He can get it there, he's just not that accurate on the deep ball most of the time.

I completely agree with you. I gritted my teeth when I saw that play. I still think, regardless of this shortcoming, that Pennington can get us to the promised land.

Penny has a noodle arm, so what, he's a great leader, he's smart, he's efficient, and he uses all the weapons he's given. Ginn will be very good with Penny but, he won't be at his best until we have a QB who can chuck it. That doesn't mean the Dolphins would be better, it just means Ginn's potential would shine brighter with big stats.

Personally, I'll take the smart and efficient guy with the noodle arm!
