Since the Jets and Bills have hired HCs that were former DCs, I thought that people might be interested to take a look at DCs that have become HCs over the last 25 years and see how they have done.

There are a total of 41 since 1990.

A little over half of them have won at least 1 playoff game, and only 7 out of 41 have won a Super Bowl.

Edit: I just noticed that I posted this in the Miami Dolphins Forum. Sorry!

Technically, it could be considered Miami Dolphins info since we may end up looking for a HC that could be a DC, but feel free to move to the appropriate forum.

Nice shot at RW3, he will be getting paid top money soon.

Where is Dennis Allen? Did he join anyone's staff after getting fired by Oakland? Maybe he heads back to Denver cause it looks like their booting that entire coaching staff...they told Adam Gase his services are no longer needed.

C'mon you're practically FH's defensive defense lawyer; don't get blinded by the media hype. Seattle is carried by their ELITE defense and has been since Wilson's arrival.

Seattle's defense, yards allowed:
'12 - 306.2 (#4)
'13 - 273.6 (#1)
'14 - 267.1 (#1)

Seattle's defense, points allowed:
'12 - 15.3 (#1)
'13 - 14.4 (#1)
'14 - 15.9 (#1)

defensive minded coaches are a lot more intense and play to win, and take chances. offensive minded guys are a lot more laid back, and a lot more conservative

Defense still wins Championships. A dominant defense barely needs a QB (Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer). An adequate defense needs a decent QB (Flacco, Eli Manning, Russell Wilson). A poor defense needs a superstar QB to be successful (Marino, Brees, Manning) Seattle is taking this whole thing. Ugh.

You and I agree on a lot of stuff...but have you watched RW play a lot? He's like a freaking robot - almost always makes the right decision, has a good arm, great accuracy, great mobility.

haven't you heard? russell wilson is the only reason that defense plays well, he's basically their defensive mvp. all qb.

but in all seriousness Russell Wilson is a great qb, and that franchise has used him perfectly.

Seattle may win it again this year. Their defense is sick. But they aren't the norm. The other 3 teams that are alive at this point have dominant offenses and middle of the road defenses.
So you can get there with dominant defense but your odds are much better at building a top offense.

Was just poking fun at OP. Yes I realize RW3 has better supporting cast and at the time wasn't elite, but he will eventually get paid like he is.
And if I'm the defensive defense lawyer then you guys are the Secret Tannehill Protection Society... (STPS) LOL.

I think it all comes down to the question: Do you have an elite QB? Cause if you do, then the defense becomes a little less important. But if you don't (and most teams don't) then you MUST have a top defense. Now, if you have an elite defense paired with a good to great QB like Seattle does, well, that's a recipe for success.

Defensive coaches are typically better at adjusting and adapting in game conditions than offensive minded coaches. Defensive coaches are constantly changing and adapting their defense every week to adapt and matchup to the vastly different styles of offense they face on a weekly basis. Espcially in college.

Offensive coaches aren't really forced to do this. They just do what they do. They run their offense, and try to make the defense adjust.

The best analogy for offensive/defensive coaches making the jump to head coach is similar to the floor/ceiling aspect of prospects. Offensive coaches typically have a lower floor than defensive coaches. That's why offensive minded coaches tend to wear their welcome out much quicker than defensive minded coaches once they become head coaches. They typically have much more difficulty when it comes to adjusting and changing.

It's not a shot at Russel Wilson. He is a good QB, but he isn't in the same league as Brady, Montana, Roethlisberger, and Manning. Getting paid top money doesn't make you a top QB. See Andy Dalton and Jay Cutler.
