Just read the article that Brennan Scalett is taking snaps at DE.
What does this mean? If we play a 3-4 D, is there much of a difference between outside LBer and DE? Does it mean we may play some 4-3?

I can’t recall but was he the guy who played really well at LB last year or was it the other guy who’s name I can’t recall?

I think it means we have a bunch of high quality pass rushing 3-4 OLBs and Scarlett isn’t one of them, so he better learn to hold the edge with his hand in the ground or get used to golfing on Sundays.
Thanks. Very helpful

Our front six players are largely positionless. They bounce around and play multiple roles, and there isn't a lot of difference between our Strong Side LB and our run downs Defensive End.
No, Scarlett is not a pass rusher, his game is grunt. He's 260 lbs plus and has 5.5 sacks in 6 years... on top of this, we drafted Cameron Goode to take a run at his job.
My guess... we cut Scarlett at the final cuts if everyone is healthy.

Big difference in a 34 DE vs what the linebacker is doing

But our defense is a damn amoeba so you never really know who's up to what

I dont recall anyone playing really well at LB last year lol.
Really? Phillips, AVG, Baker? They all had good years. Were they All Pro level? No, but they were assignment sound for the most part.

Our scheme is not that of a traditional 4/3 alignment from 2 decades past.

They were good at certain things but my definition of really good must just be different than yours. There are no true every down LB's on this team that can do it all at a high level.

There are, literally, less than a handful of guys in the league that can "do it all at a high level". Furthermore, with the way we (and many other teams) use situational package substitutions, it isn't necessary or even that highly valued as it once was.

Our scheme is built for "edge" players, not tradition LB roles. The line between LBs and Edge is becoming increasingly blurred, and expecting players to fall into an archaic positional structure is unrealistic. Once we get beyond first down, or "and short" situations, we take the traditional LB types out and use "box" Safeties closer to the LOS.

I'll play though. Can you list the LBs in the league that are "three down" in your opinion, that are run stoppers, are good enough in coverage, and can rush the passer all at an "elite" level? IMO they are almost non existent, and in the scheme/philosophy we use, not particularly advantageous. Would it be great if we happened to find that needle in a haystack? Absolutely, but there just aren't many who can do it in today's pass heavy game, so I'm not even sure building your defense around that philosophy is a good idea.
