In your estimation, who has the best Defensive Front Seven in the AFC?

The following are views by the Pats fans on the their Front Seven:

The Front Seven will set the tempo for this Team. They should have their way with most other Teams they face this year. I just can't see this Seven getting pushed down the field by anyone.

This Front Seven is right up there with the one Pittsburgh had during their glory years. This NE Front Seven is a Super Bowl Front Seven and add their backups and they are the Best Ever.

A couple of AFC teams' front sevens comparable to the Pats:

SD---lost a couple of LBs in the last few years due to GM obstinence and police gunfire. A couple of younger players had great seasons despite performance enhancing drug scandals.

Baltimore----it's all about Ray: you heard him whine like a little girl to draft a big DT----Ngata! Now, he's their center-piece again, unless you actually watched Bart Scott and Adalius Thomas play. (Oh yeah, we have him now! Ha!)

Mimi---french poodle of the AFC East. Yet another D transition, but Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas and Joey Porter make their opponents pay attention.

Pitt---another transition D: Larry Foote, Clark Hagans, James Farrior and Casey Hampton still the heart.

Miami by far..Taylor, Roth, Thomas, Crowder, Porter
 
The whole front 7 is over rated concept.No front 7 plays the entire game and i think it should be more like front 11.

in 3-4 6 LB [1 MLB and 1 OLB ] and 4 DL
4-3 5 DL [1 DT and 1 DE] and 4 LB

Every teams plays alot rototation and i for 1 cannot imagine how you can quantify a unit by leaving out players who are in constant rotation for 30-40% of the plays.

Yet somehow, the Dolphins manage to do so.
 
The Patriots have a better one then the Dolphins, they added Adalius Thomas who is a monster, Joey Porter is old and done. Plus the Pats have the best 3-4 defensive line. Jets have a talented LB corps but not a good d-line.

Porter and Thomas are the same age.
 
I don't know many teams that match the Patriots up front (Warren, Wilfork, and Seymour). Again, we kind of run that hybrid so our front will still look at little 4-3ish (I think you guys still do it and Colvin is the rusher like Taylor, correct?) where Holliday and Traylor man the inside with Roth and Taylor on the edges.

Even though NE had the 5th best Run defense in the NFL (in terms of YPG 94.2) compared to our 8th best Run defense in the NFL (101.1 YPG). I believe our run defense is better...here's why

Miami held opponents to a 3.5 YPC (5th best in NFL), while the Patriots held opponents to a 3.9 YPC (7th best in NFL). Miami's opponents ran for 461 Attempts (28.8 A/G) while NE opponents only rushed for 388 Attempts (24.2 A/G)---almost 5 more carries the Dolphins face which could explain Miami giving up more yards. Miami allowed on 7 TDs, while NE allowed 11 TDs (rushing). Miami only allowed 3 run plays of 20+ yards, while NE allowed 6 plays of 20+ yards.

I also believe Miami puts more pressure up front (even with its DLine) than the Patriots do. I don't know where I can find a QB Hurry stat, but I know Miami had many more sacks along the DLine than did the Patriots---including Taylor and Colvin as part of the DLine sack numbers)

I think it's pretty much a toss between LB's for each team. You take Bruschi, Vrabel, and A. Thomas and match them up against J. Porter, Crowder, and Z. Thomas and you basically have the same unit. A pass rushing specialist--Thomas and Porter, a run stuffing specialist---Bruschi and Thomas, and a guy who can cover and stuff the run---Vrabel and Crowder.

So, because of the better numbers that I believe our front 3/4 had in the run game and in Sack #'s, I'd have to give the edge to Miami as having a better Front 7---again the edge is of the slightest of margins too.
 
Stats Inc. just rated each team's units for ESPN.com. They aren't the be-all-end-all, just another useful opinion. At DL, NE came in at 3 while Miami came in at 6. At LB, NE ranked 4 while Miami was 7.

So both are top notch, with NE ranked higher by Stats Inc. I happen to agree with the assessment.
