So we know Wake will transition to a role player as the pass rush specialist. Judging by the alignments in what I've seen so far, Mario Williams is playing the strong side spot with Jason Jones on the other end (weak side on LT).

When wake comes in the game, he will play strong side and Williams shifts to the weak side. At least that's what I've seen so far. I haven't really seen Wake get moved to the weak side.

I'm not really sure about the thought process here. Why not play Jones on the strong side and just sub in Wake and leave Mario on the weak side full time? Anyone have insights on this?

Jones reputation is a guy who never seemed to put it all together to be a great full time player. He was know for being good in run defense and setting the edge but struggled to be as good in rushing the QB.

We really needed a guy who is stronger in the run game so I hope he works out. Just not sure about how they are moving these guys around.

Mitchell is back (sigh) and "they" say Phillips is improved. Warmsley is the 4th guy and I'm wondering if he is even active on game day.

Branch has been pretty much invisible and I don't expect much from him. Jones and Wake will split snaps and that leaves Branch as the guy to give Mario a breather. Mario is 31 and you would think he would get some relief on snaps but I suspect he will get more snaps than any other DE given his backup situation unless Jones also mixes in that weak side rotation as well when Wake is in the game.

I'm not sure Fede will even be active on game day. Why would they activate 5 DE's? Especially when he plays the same spot as Wake and Jones. Likely 3 DT's and 4 DE's on the active 45.

Thoughts?

Wemust stop the run or at least limit the yardage especially on first and or third and long. Pressure on Wilson is only effective if we sack him otherwise their receivers will be wide open for a long gain if he's flushed and not sacked.

Last yr, Principal Joe said they were going to line up Wake & Suh on the same side. Did that ever come to be?

Will/has VJ considered that option?

wake has always rushed vs the right tackle...I'm sure that's about exposing the right tackles feet and lateral quickness...the lesser foot athlete is usually put at right tackle

I would activate warmsley and play him in the sub at dt and as a depth base de option on early downs...sit branch sit fede

warmsleys got more pass rush talent than any depth this team has minus the situational rusher wake and possibly Phillips who will need a blow...

All I know is this BIG $, BIG NAME DL better produce for a change instead of talking about it.

Big $? Suh maybe but everyone else is not that high on the scale. Want to see a highly paid D-line, look at the Giants. We still have a hole at DT so I will be surprised if we are much better vs the run.

My impression is that Cam Wake will play on the left side (rather than moving back & forth based on strong-side, weak-side).

Throughout his career, Cam Wake has had an explosive, low-to-the-ground outside pass rush from the left side. His pass rush from the right side is not nearly as good.

I cannot remember Wake ever playing on the right side of the line...maybe he has but very seldom if at all.

Either way we need to mix things up. If we do the same thing over and over Wilson will have a field day out there. The LBs need to step up their game but I just don't see it happening. If their RB's get past the line then it will be first down after first down for them while our offense sits and watch.

Ozzy rules!!

There is no doubt that Warmsley will be active. Rotating DTs the first week is a must given they are not really in game shape. It takes a couple of live games! Even if that were not true, he would still be active.

That's a pretty firm statement but if you activate 4 DT's, you have to make someone else inactive. Look at the roster and tell me who you are willing to deactivate. So far all I can come up with is...

Fede, Warmsley, Doughty, Lucas, Hunter, Pead & Pouncey and I am still missing one person.

Who are you willing to sacrifice?

I don't think "football shape" plays into the equation as both teams are facing the same issue.

Gray and Williams/Drake is one possibility.

Gray has been ballin on special teams and the others also play ST. The we face only having two TE's. If one gets dinged and Gray is out, we are nixing one complete package and a bunch of plays from the offense. No 2 TE sets. I don't think you want to limit yourself like that against this defense.

Williams was kept on the roster because he is a big ST contributor.

Drake could help fill a void left if Parker does not play. Parker would be the last inactive on my list if his hammy is still tight as of Friday's practice.
