An interesting stat I was looking at, and may give some insight as to how our draft will go this year. Out of 16 games we played this year we allowed our opponents to score over 20 points 12 times, while we managed to score 20 pts 11 games. Out of the 11 games that we scored over 20 we lost 5 of those games. Compairing that with some of the playoff teams, this is how we rank up.

Jets only 5 games of giving up more than 20, 9 scoring more than 20. Of the 9 they only lost 3(two to us)
Pats 7, 12, and 3 lost of the 12
Ravens 6, 11, and 3 lost of 11
Bengals 8, 6, and 1 lost of 6
Colts 6, 11, and 0 lost of 11
Chargers 9, 16, and 3 lost of 16

Point is these teams gave up fewer than 20 points less than 10 each. Except for the Bengals, they scored 20 more than they gave up. If you look at how many times we scored 20, we are right up there with these teams in scoring points. You can't let teams put up 20 on you 12 games out of 16 and expect to do anything, unless you are the Chargers and can put up more than 20 pts all 16 games. On the same front when you are putting up more than 20 pts a game, your defense has to hold people to under 20 like these teams did. This is going to be a defensive themed draft for us this year.

As much as I would like to see a superior WR or TE our defense needs an over haul. It's realy been the biggest weekness of this team this year. I can't even pin point the area of our defense that needs the most work. Our seccondary is slopy but i know with time our rookies will get better. We need a big young NT. Ferguson is gona be what 35? He is still a great player but his time is running out. I think our biggest weakeness is at LB. I dont think JP will be back next year and JT is on the way out. I think after all of that our next weakness is depth on o-line. We got a great set of guys but they just need to stay healthy. I think after we overcome these issues then we can focus on our WR and TE situation. But as for right now they're not doing half bad. We'll see how they do when they come back. Wonder if Ginn will be back.

I definitely agree. Our defense is what killed us this year. If Ronnie Brown comes back healthy and Henne can work as the starter for the entire off season we should score even more points on offense. If the pass defense can become even average and the run defense not drop off too much we should be able to get a bunch more wins.

we need a middle backer and a ballhawking safety and we'll be fine...

our CB spot is set, unfortunately we had to rely on the 2 rookies and they got beat plenty and made plenty of mistakes... but they got valuable experience, they'll now have a full offseason to get stronger/better and next year will be much better... that will solve a lot of the secondary problems itself...

Great Post!!! good in site ... i feel defense is going to be the 1st 2 picks...

God I hope someone real good drops into our lap for any reason!

If the only thing we did in FA was to get a FS and NT I would be on cloud nine, anything more and it's just gravey.

Our defense allowed 390 points this season
which is the second worst in 10 years
the only year we allowed more points was the 1-15 season

This team needs a defensive change

yes we were actually lucky to be near .500 with this defense.

The defensive numbers were pretty close to what we put up in the 1-15 season 25th scoring compared to 30th

Luckily the scoring offense has improved each of the last 4 years

We went from 29th in 2006, to 26th in 2007, 21st in 2008 and finally 15th this year. Hopefully this 2009 defense was an aberation cuz it seems like we have something positive going on the offensive side of the ball.
