Nowadays one cannot go through an entire page for any given thread on this website without reading the word "tank" or "tanking." I feel the word is used way too liberally these days and especially around here.

What exactly is tanking? And who exactly is responsible for the decision to tank or not?

YOUNG PLAYERS:

How exactly and why exactly would a young player on his rookie contract "tank"? He is 100% going to give it his all so he can get that second contract and hopefully get paid to secure his and his family's livelihood.
How does the grizzled vet (becoming harder and harder to find on our team these days) buy into tanking? Why would he? If he knew a tank job was going on, why would he spend his last years on this roster?
The answer is he wouldn't. No player in their right mind is part of any tanking effort.
COACHING STAFF:

How can any member of the coaching staff from the HC on down to basic positional coaches in their right mind contribute to a tanking effort?
Do they purposefully teach players ineffective technique?
Do the coaches systematically design game plans in order to lose? Wouldn't this bode very poorly for their futures as coaches in the NFL?

GM/PLAYER PERSONNEL:

These are the only individuals that I could see who could be part of a tanking effort. But to what capacity would they do this? And how would they actually "tank"?

Is it by releasing older veterans to create cap space? No - all good teams do this.
I know somebody will bring up Vincent Taylor getting cut since he allegedly had so much of an impact. He was picked up by the Bills (another floundering franchise) and add to their practice squad. Not even their final roster. The Dolphins have been deprived of good, young talent for so long we convinced ourselves a 6th round DT who made the Bills practice squad was a promising young piece for our future.
You can say "hey! trading away Tunsil was clearly a move to tank!" I hope most people on this board realize we got more for Tunsil than the Raiders got for Khalil Mack. Stop and think about that for a second. NOBODY is off limits. Not even Tom Brady to Bill B. Good teams always build through the draft. This trade enabled us to have MUCH more flexibility in the next two drafts. Whether that is trading up to get to a spot where we take our future QB or just draft a ton of guys to flood the team with young, hungry, and competitive talent we have our options.

I guess what I am trying to get at is IMO tanking is purposefully putting your team in a situation to lose to get in a better draft position. I think more of what is happening here is we are ripping off the band-aid of mediocrity: throwing away bad contracts, establishing a culture of personal conditioning and mental aptitude, cutting players we as a fan base deluded ourselves into thinking were legit play-makers, and building through the draft (THIS IS WHAT ALL PERENNIAL SUPER BOWL CONTENDERS DO).

For me it's simply not investing all of your resources (capital/draft picks etc) into the "current" season to win it all. So by my definition, most teams "tank" every season.

It's a horrible phrase that means something different to everyone, and as a result has contributed to 77% of all activity here over the last six months.

Call it what you like but the FO are doing exactly what you stated in the first sentence. This doesn't mean we aren't also doing what you describe in the second sentence, but we shouldn't kid ourselves any more. We have deliberately and knowingly sacrificed being competitive this year for the greater good.

I agree completely - hence why I am saying we are just starting to act like a decent/good team.

Looks at the current offensive line.

Yea the GM was told by the owner to not worry about this years results.

Players and coaches don't tank.
The players may lose passion over the year over a bad season and could not give 100% once their bodies get worn out.

Tank/Tanking: is a simplistic way of thinking. The complexity of running an NFL football team is too much so they focus on what they think is the solution to all our problems: the top draft pick. It fixes everything for them.

The fact that people try to put lipstick on this tank is past amusing to me...

Jesse Davis (never played the position in the pros) is at LT...Isaiah Prince (preseason 3) is at RT...Calhoun (couldn't block rain with an umbrella) is at RG...and Ryan Fitzpatrick is under center...and our secret weapon is an UDFA WR. When I read that back to myself, I now can relax.

If that isn't a tank then we have hired the dumbest coaches and coordinators of the past decade.

Tanking is a term devoted to teams that finally decided to blow it up. It's a media driven term made up by fans but teams generally tank every now and then when they decide enough is enough.

Miami has never been one player away on any side of the ball since the 70s. Theyve been running in place going 6-10 / 8-8 for 20 years with the couple playoff outlier years where they get throughly demolished in said playoffs. They're blowing the team up and getting draft capital and a plethora of cap space to rebuild the team the "right" way. Going 7-9 this year and next year benefits no one. Gotta blow it up, hit rock bottom and rebuild it.

It's the most obvious of tanks since the Colts in 2012.

Tanking is some of the posters on this board that are rooting for us to go 1-15
I won’t even call them fans

What do you call coaches and management that trades away/cuts rookie contracts that are outplaying those contracts?

Tanking simply means winning games isnt the team's top priority in the upcoming season.
