Something to keep in mind about last night's loss is how difficult an environment the Dolphins were in. I was listening to NFL.Network either the day before or the day of the game and they reported that Denver was originally picked by the league to play this game against Pittsburg. Denver flat out refused because they saw it s an impossible situation for them to win in. Evidently, Miami was asked next and Saban et.al said, "Sure".
I always thought that Miami had little or no chance to win this game. Think about the odds of winning on the NFL Champs home field the first game of the season. What chance would Pittsburg have if the roles were reversed and the Dolphins were the champs opening at home on a Thursday night? Nobody would give Pitt a chance.
The amazing thing is that Miami COULD have won this game but for two interceptions. Give them some credit for staying with Pitt for 3 1/2 quarters. It's not the end of the world and there are 15 games left to play. I'm 54 years old and grew up in Homestead, FL. I remember when the Dolphins started and have always been a fan. I believe Saban has done a tremendous job in turning this team around - would you want Wanny or JJ back? Give him time and he will have this franchise back on top of the football world. I think coaching wise, he is as good or better than Shula. He will never match Shula's record because of his age, however, I believe he is one of the elite coaches in the NFL.
Let's wait and see how we do against Buffalo before we throw in the towel or start making silly comments about Saban, Culpepper, etc.

Thanks for bringing this up. I read about the Broncos bowing out yesterday and thought ... "hmmmm." Good post.

Nice post, altho I dont agree with all of it..

I never knew teams had a right to decline when it comes to making the schedule.. Can anyone elaborate on that?

I agree, but not with this point (in bold)

The Lehan pen was the reason we lost, they would have punted from the endzone, we would have had the ball on the 50ish yardline, and the Steelers would have been reeling.

Instead they go on a 6 minute plus drive.

Please. Charlie Batch.

Look how far they went with Tommy Maddox and Kordell Stewart.

Hell, how many games did we win with Jay Fiedler, Gus Frerotte, etc. over the course of several seasons??

All he had to do was play well for one game with the best team in the world. Not an insurmountable task for a veteran with some skills.

The penalty on Lehan is the one that really hurt. After two great plays, then that happens, it really took the wind out of my sail.

I believe that the defending champ has not lost that game since they started doing the thursday night thing.

Hey, just wanted to say big thanks for starting this thread....you made some outstanding points and support your facts well. You are definitely right about we came into a tough environment. No, I wouldn't trade Saban for anyone else in the world....I don't care what anyone says about him or the stupid "challenge" he shoulda made. This team is heading in the right direction. I know we can only become better. Again, thanks a lot for that post you def made me feel better.

The interceptions came from trying to catch up. They didn't lose the game, just kept us from coming back. If we could convert a short 3 and 2 without a gaget play call, everything would have been different.

I've been trying to tell a buddy of mine this and he refuses to believe me. Has anyone seen an article, or clip stating that Denver opted out of the game? If so, please post it, Thanks

I posted the original thread. Regarding Denver not being willing to play this game against Pittsburg, I heard it on the NFL Network. I'm a pretty busy guy (I'm a pastor) and I can't remember if it was on Wednesday or Thursday that I heard them talk about it. I THINK it was the pre-game show with Rich Eisens, Dion Sanders and Mariucci (sp?). It caught my ear because I didn't think teams had that much choice. I'm just reporting what they said.
I also wish that we had won this game. However, I'm not going to slit my wrists because we lost. It was a nearly impossible situation for them to play in. Did we play great? Not exactly. I have seen this team play a whole lot worse. There were many positives in this game and I believe that Saban has the right approach - work on the process and the results will come. He is a proven winner and I don't know of any coach I'd take over him. The penalty and the interceptions can be corrected with coaching. Saban proved that he could make those corrections in the last 6 games of the last season.
Keep your heads up, Phin fans. I think we will be pretty happy about our team at the end of the season.
