One recent example of this is the contract signed by Derek Cameron Wake. It was widely reported in January he signed a four-year deal that could be worth $4.9 million. Nope.

Wake's salary is scheduled at $310,000 in 2009, $395,000 in 2010, $480,000 in 2011 and $565,000 in 2012. That adds up to $1.75 million. He got approximately $1 million in bonuses and guarantees which bring the deal to about $2.7 million and he has another $900,000 or so in incentives that bring the potential total of the deal to about $3.6 million.

Awsome. Its a win win for us because if he turns out to be great we have a steal if not then just cut him. Thats good for that much potiental.

This should let people know that, although he could be a great OLB for us and be Porters replacement . . . when u get a guy for that type of money, u don't put all of your eggs in that basket . . . I have heard some people think we don't need to address OLB because of Wake . . . . lol . . .trust me, the FO will be bringing in atleast 2 more OLB's.

I don't know how you can come to any conclusion on the size of a contract. This is a business and the amount you pay for a player isn't always predicated on their ability to play a position. Everyone looks for deals and if you can keep a players contract numbers down even when you know they're wrth far more, you do it.

I think you wouldn't have seen us win the biding war for this kid if he wasn't worthy of the position. Especially considering he's a LB and you know BP was a big part of his signing.

I agree we will be signing more LB's but I think we are more depserate need of ILB than OLB. However, if we can get both, I think we get both.

He seems to have a great deal of upside. You don't just put up those numbers by luck, even in the CFL. If he can contribute 8 or so sacks, I'll be happy.

I concur. We are in need of an ILB right now at the moment. The foursome of Porter, Roth, Anderson, and Wake is serviceable at OLB for 2009. At ILB, we have Akin Ayodele and Reggie Torbor...someone needs to be added.

At this point, I'd even consider breaking the bank for Dansby. An offer similar to what we showed to Calvin Pace last year seems semi-reasonable.

That said, a small part of me thinks they might just try and address OLB as well; Matt Roth has his strenghts and weaknesses, but let's face it - I don't think he's going to play like Merriman, Adalius Thomas, or LaMarr Woodley week in and week out; and if this regime can find a guy, I think they'll make a move.

I'm pretty excited to see what Wake can do. Does anyone have any idea what number he will wear?

I think that this should be a good sign to all that he is in no way a lock to be any type of impact player.....actually, same would have been true with the original value reported. If he was a sure thing to be half as good as so many around here hope he is going to be, other teams would have outbid us by far.

I hope we got a steal....but thinking that we did already is getting way ahead of ourselves.

I don't agree.

I get what your sayin and agree but I think its more that when you get a once failed NFL player turned CFL superstar you dont put all your eggs in THAT basket.

Well I think he had it quite a bit easier in the CFL. From what I get they throw a lot more there which means he probably did the whole Joey Porter thing, just racking up sacks while making very little impact anywhere else. But he does have potential, that interview with him and talking about how he just wants to make his body into a weapon kinda scares me and I dont ever have to face him on the field. Then again I'm also not 6'6 300.
