Derek hagan recently signed a 4yr contract , it hought the fins especially always pushed for rookie 5 yr contracts and the problem with allen was he wanted a 5 and the fins wanted a 6 yr deal. So im confused by all of this...why does hagan get a 4yr deal and allen a 5-6 yr deal?

My guess would be the amount of money Allen gets over Hagan. Miami will try to spred his money out to make his numbers more cap friendly.

Because of the amount of investment in the guaranteed money. I'm sure that the Dolphins would gladly sign Allen to the same 4 year deal that they signed Hagan for.

Exactly.

If Allen accepts say only a 4 million dollar bonus instead of 8 million.

In that case, 4 years are fine.

Only top 16 picks are eligible for 6-year contracts. Beyond that, the maximum length is 5 years, which is typically only done into the second round. Third round and after, it's typically a 4-year deal, although some teams will employ 3-year deals with their late picks if they're not concerned about the RFA year.

Actually its a rule you can only sign the top 16 draft picks to 6 year deals and you can sign third rounders to 4 year deals...
