He was placed on Injured Reserve? Saban was asked about Thompson' play against Atlanta, which was heralded as a turn around for him and a chance at a roster spot or trade, and he tossed it off seemingly as a fluke occurrance and scoffed at Thompson's leaving the game for a tweaked hammy. Now he's on IR? Strange...

I am really starting to think that the ONLY reason that Derrius Thompson was placed on Injured Reserve was to avoid paying the $1,107,500 it would cost, if we were to release him. He's getting paid $550K so I'm thinking Saban figures by placing him on IR (This is the last year of his contract), it would be cheaper to let him sit out the rest of his contract than it would be to pay the $1,107,500 CAP HIT it would to release him. I really do believe this is the logic behind placing him on IR and if that's the case, I think that is a VERY VERY wise business move by Saban saving us AT LEAST $500K. He definitely knows what he's doing and by placing Thompson on IR, it won't cost us any money against the CAP and an injury settlement would be made. Definitely a smart move by Saban from a business standpoint.

ya... but really unfair to DT. Ya he isnt that great, but he should atleast be allowed to try and get some playing time somewhere else... Smart business move.... but I dont like it...

That really screws Thompson. He couldn't get with another team because of the IR, AND he can't play 'till week 10 if Miami keeps him around. Devious, coach saban.

Agreed, that it really is unfair, sneaky, and underhanded but it's of best business. I personally don't like it either but I really do respect the fact that Saban actually put some serious consideration behind the move and really did what was best for the team and not Derrius Thompson, and in reality that's what we all want... But lets not feel too bad for DT now, maybe he had been better and didn't drop so many balls for us, I'd feel really bad for him. Not to mention, getting 100's of thousands for dropping balls and doing nothing... I'm sure him and his family will be living it up.

I don't care if it is better for the team, there are some things that you do because you respect the people who work for you. If Derrius wasn't seriously injured, this is a really low thing to do, and I'd rather have the players that I'm rooting for get treated fairly than an extra 500,000 dollars so we can sign a scrub.

We've offered a contract to Peerless Price.. If he signs.. we cut Thompson... if he doesnt... we keep him... smart money management actually.

I dont think thats correct. If we had cut DT, chances are that his injury settlement would have been equal to this year's base salary...so we would have had to count the final year amortization of his signing bonus ($557K) and the injury settlement($550k) resulting in a cap charge of $1,107,500.
By going on IR, we pay his base salary (550K) and count the final year of amortization of his signing bonus (557K) resulting in a cap charge of $1,107,500.

We neither lose or gain anything by putting DT on IR as opposed to cutting him.
