After breaking down the tape, I am encouraged by the improved talent on the offensive line. I am discouraged by the number of players making significant execution mistakes.

Possesion #1
------------

1-10
Running play. Long, Smiley, Grove, and Carey drive their men 1 yard off the ball. Thomas whiffs on the MLB, and the MLB destroys Polite in the hole. Ronnie manages to make 3 yards off of the play. Carey pancakes his man after driving him 5 yards of the line. Great job by Carey. Pathetic effort by Thomas and Polite.

2-7
Running Play. Smiley, Grove, Thomas, and Carey push the DTs 3 yards off the line initially. Long gets beat inside by Abraham, but manages to push him past the play. It does mess up the timing of the play. Fasano is beat inside, but this does not affect the play. Unfortunately, the DTs get back into the play after Smiley, Grove, Thomas, and Carey fail to sustain the blocks.

3-7
Passing Play. Front five successful form a pocket. Neither Fasano nor Polite chip #71, and Ronnie whiffs on the pass block. Chad does not show good situational awareness. He was almost looking at #71 when he beat Ronnie. Fumble.

Possesion #2
------------

1-10
Passing Play. Good pass protection. Pennington was slow with his reads. He need to get the ball to Ronnie as soon as he broke. Gave up 3 yards because of slow decision.

2-10
Passing Play. Both Grove and Long allow the pocket to be collaped. Ricky does a good job of pass blocking. Grove recovers and stands his ground. Smiley helps Long with Abraham. Ginns route is too short, but we convert.

1-10
Running Play. Carey and Fasano block down while Thomas pulls for a kickout block. Thomas misses on the block forcing Polite to pick up his man. Smiley seals of the MLB, but Grove misses on the WLB. Grove ends up on the ground. Yuck!! If Thomas makes his block, then this is a 10 yard play after Polite engages the SLB. Unfortuantely, the SLB makes the play.

2-8
Passing Play. Pennington telegraphs the screen play. Just looking up from the handoff to the right before looking left would have turned this into a big play. Bess slips and Abraham makes the play after Pennington's telegraph. Smiley and Long had good blocks in front of Bess. Grove was moving to engage the next man.

3-5
Passing Play. Good pass protection. Pennington connects with Bess for the conversion.

1-10
Running Play. Excellent blocking by Long, Smiley, Thomas, and Carey. Bess schools the SLB. Grove whiffs on the on WLB, but Ricky beats him to the hole. 14 yard running play!!!

1-10
Running Play. Front five are successful with their blocks. Bess geats beat. Yuck!!

2-8
Passing Play. Long, Smiley, Grove, and Thomas have good protection. Carey is beat but he recovers.

3-4
Passing Play. Long destroyed by a bull rush from Abraham. Sack.

Love stuff like this ... many thanks.

Long is getting a lot of criticism but he did start off strong.

I do some work over at Pro Football Focus and I'll pass this link over to the guys, since they love stuff like this and have done their own since they reviewed the Dolphins game. Long doesn't come out too badly but the interior struggled immensely.

The weird thing about Fasano is you take those two fumbles out and he had a pretty good game. Still, can't turn the ball over.

good analysis, i want to get my hands on a copy of the game to pay close attention to the pass protection myself, because i watched at a bar and didn't have the best of spots to see the game up close... this type of detail is great though, thanks

I watched the rest of the first half.

Long:
Very inconsistent first half. He was very good and very bad with some average mixed in with the extremes.

Smiley:
Very inconsistent first half. The best player of the first two possessions.

Grove:
He continued to struggle and play slow. I hope he is thinking too much because it is a new offense for him.

Thomas:
He struggled in this game. I am not surprised since this is only his second game.

Carey:
Best player of the first half. I am surprised. My first impression was that he had a poor first half, but the tape showed I was wrong.

Nice post =] I wish I had tape also to watch it again.. I could only watch online though so eh..
