....Take Calvin Johnson at #2. Now, I know what your thinking, no way do they draft ANOTHER WR that high, but I'm not saying draft him to keep him. If they take him they can start a bidding war and get a LOT more picks for him. We all know TB is salivating over him, so imagine what they could get from TB, or even another team) if, instead of trading out of number two they stay there and take the guy a lot of people want. They could start a bidding war like the Eli Manning situation. It could throw a pretty interesting twist into that draft this year.

I only bring this up because I have been trying to come up with new interesting draft scenerios to pass a little time and break up the monotony of 782 new mock drafts to read every day .

Detroit's actually in a little bit of a quandary. The #2 spot in the draft is terrible for anything but trading down 1 spot or up 1 spot. The 4th overall is the best pick to trade into.

Which they could easily do if they take Calvin, since TB is at #4 and enamored (sp?) with the guy. The could probably even get and extra pick or two out of TB by taking Calvin THEN trading him to TB as opposed to just trading the #2 pick.

Hell, I think Detroit should take CJ and keep him actually.

That may be a good pick for them, but given the history of top WRs to Detroit in the draft, I think the fans (all 7 of them) would burn the stadium down and for a lynch mob to get Millen.

Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams would be a pretty damn good tandem though. If they had a good QB they could be as good as, if not better, than Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison.

They seem to be pretty high on both McCown and the QB from Connecticut (forget is name right now) at least as QBs who can come in and run the offense.

I really couldn't see how the fans could be mad with CJ, since he is far and away the best player in the draft. I understand it is another WR, but Kitna did pretty damn good last season, and that offense would be that much better with CJ. If they didn't trade Tatum Bell, I would think the outsides would be pretty open with RW and CJ out there to draw attention.

That would be an interesting situation for Detroit to be. Drafting a player and hold him "hostage" in hopes that another team will offer you more to take him.

The biggest problem with this type of scenario, especially with Tampa Bay, is that Tampa Bay doesn't have much to offer Detroit to take Calvin Johnson off their hands. TB in a way is also rebuilding and would like to keep all their picks or find a way to garner more.

You should also remember that Gruden has also expressed interest in trading down. TB defense is getting older and their d-line didn't do much last year in the way of stopping the run or getting after the passer.

If they were to trade down to the #9 or #10 spot, they could get Amobi Okoye whom Gruden thought highly of during the Senior Bowl. They could then take A. Gonzalez, Sydney Rice or any number of WRs in the 2nd round.

I don't see how anyone could be mad with him either, but if I were a Detroit fan I'd still be wary, just given the history of the WRs they took. ALL of them were supposed to be the next big thing, and so far all of them have tanked. Roy Williams is coming around, but he didn't have an immediate impact, and he still is inconsistant. Charles Roges and Mike Williams aren't even in the picture. So out of 3 veryu high WRs only 1 is panning out, but he hasn't been performing tot he standards he should given the spot he was taken. I like Roy Williams (he was a Longhorn :rocker:), and I think he WILL be great eventually, but he isn't yet and he's taking to long to become an impact player. When you're taken that high you are expected to be a go-to guy right away. He's a go-to guy by default right now, but he isn't a gamebreaker, and he should be. That is why Calvin would make me wary. I see all the hype, I've seen all the footage, and he looks worlds better than those other guys, but then again, each guy that was taken before him was supposed to be better than the previous years WR. So even though Johnson would be a great pick for ANY team, as a Detroit fan there would be no way to suppress that wary feeling.

I definitely think RW is performing to his draft spot over the past few years. WRs take time to come around, and he has played extremely well the past seasons I thought. And I don't think Mike Williams should be included with Rogers and Williams, since MW hadn't even played football for a year, and that would affect anyone no matter thier position on the field. CJ is nothing like Rogers or (Mike) Williams. He has great work ethic and a wonderful head on his shoulders. Normally WRs aren't safe picks by any means, but I certainly think CJ is as safe a pick as any in this draft.

I have to agree with you here. You can even ask Pittsburgh Steeler's DB Ike Taylor about Calvin Johnson's work ethic and down to earth attitude. They worked out together at Tom Shaw's camp and their one-on-one battles were the talk of the camp.

Detroit would be wise to take Johnson. He is the most talented player in the draft, and their wide receiving corp still needs help outside of Roy Williams. The fact that Mike Williams and Charles Rogers failed should be more reason to draft Johnson, rather than avoid him.
