Lions waived DE Anthony Zettel.
It's a surprise after Zettel had 6.5 sacks in a starting role last year, but he wasn't a fit in a Detroit scheme that's expected to have more 3-4 fronts. 26-year-old Zettel should resurface on waivers. Sep 5 - 6:45 PM

I think it would be a decent pickup, also played for Miami's current D-line coach.

Here is what they said about him going into the draft:

Strengths
Relentless motor. Doesn?t give offensive lineman a snap off with a lazy rep. Credited by Penn State with 38 tackles for loss over his career. Urgency ratchets up even higher when he smells a play is there to be made. Reads quarterback's eyes and steadies himself to time a leap into passing lane. Had six passes defended in 2015. Has decent lateral footwork and a functional spin move that can open opportunities for him.
Weaknesses
Undersized interior lineman. Missing the necessary sand in his pants to take on double teams or down blocks without being pushed out of the gap. Gets mauled by power. Will struggle to leverage his gap with strength in the pros. May not have a natural position fit. Has short arms and can be controlled by length of tackles when playing outside.

Bottom Line
Maximum effort defensive lineman who doesn?t have optimal length to play at a defensive end spot or the size to play inside. Zettel has some talent and a great motor which is why he's been as productive as he has over the last two seasons, but his traits and skill set may not translate into a lengthy NFL career.

My pop warner coach always said that you can never have too many defensive ends.

Had 6.5 sacks last year and was released because he's a 4-3 lineman and they didn't like him for the 3-4. He's a quality player and if William Hayes is still hurt it'd be a solid pickup

I'd sign him even with the logjam at end. I liked him coming out and thought he was a steal (again with that value thing) in the 6th. He way outperformed that draft status and would've re-signed in Detroit if he wasn't a cookie cutter 4-3 end.

Some or all of Hayes, Wake, Branch, and Harris (good feeling about Quinn) won't be here next season so this would be a nice under the radar signing with some positional versatility (I believe he can be used inside on passing downs a la Hayes) and an eye to the future if that contract is done correctly.

I'd do it. He'll catch on somewhere and make that team look like they know what they're doing.

I'd take a flier on him, but I get the feeling we're going to roll with what we've got. We will likely bring Langford back at some point, but I don't see us particularly looking for DT help … strange as it may seem. Now, OL and CB help, we're always looking.

I'm sure there are some discussions with Kocurek taking place. Great to have the guy that has coached him providing feedback on his strengths, weaknesses and fit in the system. If we get him, pretty obvious that his position coach wanted him. Maybe cut one of the nine QBs we have on the roster and take a shot at him. Before the year is out, Im guessing we'll be happy to have more depth on the dline.

Lets see if he clears waivers. With the Kocurek connection, we have good knowledge what he can bring. However, on the surface it appears that we are already set at this position.

I would support this. He's young and we have two DE's in their mid 30's.

He's a LDE to boot, no?
