Depth Chart

DETROIT LIONS
The entire Detroit Lions recieved a much needed facelift over the offseason. Out are many of the locker room cancers and underachievers. In, are a group of intense competitors who look to make a run at Miami next January. The Lions realized that much of the game is won in the trenches and their roster is indicative of it.

OFFENSE
This offense is designed to be strong in both running and passing. Due to the extremely strong offensive line and the pro bowl caliber fullback, tight ends will rarely be used and 3 wide reciever sets will be frequent.

The quarterback situation has changed drastically with aging veteran Jeff Garcia let go and draft bust Joey Harrington traded. The Lions acquired pro bowl QB Drew Brees to infuse the offense with explosiveness. Veteran Tim Rattay was signed to backup Brees incase injuries occur. Dan Orlovsky has the tools to be a future starter and will be tutored to do so.
QB- Drew Brees--Tim Rattay--Dan Orlovsky
(6.96 Million)

As many teams are finding out, a 2 back system is necessary over a grueling 16 game season. The Jones brothers both provide elite skills at running as well as recieving. Moe Williams was brought in to be the goal line back and provide the team with veteran stability. Pro Bowl fullback Lorenzo Neal was acquired through trade to lead the way for the RBs and reduce their pounding. He has a track record for paving the way to 1500 yard rushers, most recently L.Tomlinson.
RB- Kevin Jones--Thomas Jones-- Moe Williams
FB- Lorenzo Neal
(3.455 Million)

The tight ends will not be a major feature in the offense but the Lions have 2 quality veterans who can block as well as recieve. They are able to fill in well when needed. Rookie Ed Nelson, former UConn basketball player, was picked up due to his tremendous potential.
TE- Dan Campbell-- Reggie Kelly-- Ed Nelson (R)
(800k)

Due to the abundance of talent, the Wide Recievers will be featured in the offense more so than the tight ends. The WR corps have the three major components to recieving success: a home run threat (Driver), a premier possesion reciever (Clayton), and a lightning fast slot man (Parker). The depth behind them is solid as well.
WR1- Donald Driver-- Troy Walters
WR2- Michael Clayton-- Eddie Drummond
WR3- Eric Parker-- Brandon Williams (R)
(3.255 Million)

The Offensive line is one of the most talented and powerful in the league. With 4 of the 5 starters having been to recent pro bowls, the talent is undeniable. With such skill, a powerful run game and a well protected QB is almost a sure bet. The depth features men both young and old, all of which have significant experience.
LT- Jeff Backus--Orlando Brown
LG- Tonui Fanoti--Quinn Ojinnaka(R)
C- Damien Woody-- Tom Nutten
RG- Levi Jones-- Quinn Ojinaaka(R)
RT- Willie Anderson-- Kelly Butler
(14.38 Million)

DEFENSE
This defense is special due to the fact that it has the personel to run either a 3-4 or a 4-3, depending on the situation.

The Lions signed Kemoeatu to play along side Pro Bowler Shaun Rogers in the 4-3 or to give him a breather at the important nose tackle position in the 3-4. The roster has both larger DE (Vol Oelhoffen) as well as speed rushers (Lawson) so there is not a weak position in either formation. THe defensive line is a dangerous unit, much like the OL.
DE- Aaron Schobel-- Michael Haynes
DT- Ma'ake Kemoeatu--Rodrique Wright(R)
DT- Shaun Rogers-- Shaun Cody
DE- Kimo Von Oelhoffen-- Manny Lawson(R)
(8.12 Million)

Like previously discussed, the Linebackers are a versatile group. The solid MLB, Dan Morgan was acquired through trade to lead this group. Teamed with tremendous athletes such as Boss Bailey, Steve Foley and youngster DeMeco Ryans, Morgan has a group that can blitz from any and all angle, creating nightmares for opposing offenses.
OLB- Steve Foley-- DeMeco Ryans(R)--Monty Beisel
MLB- Dan Morgan--Rob Morris
OLB- Boss Bailey-- Nate Webster-- Monty Beisel
(3.63 Million)

Previously a weakness, the defensive backfield is now a strength. The Lions found a pro bowler to start opposite of all star CB Dre Bly in former eagles CB Lito Sheppard. With such a duo, there is no good side of the field to throw to. There is several young reserves such as Keith Smith, Alan Zemaitis and Donald Strickland who have the potential to be solid starters in the future. For now, however they will be relegated to nickel and dime packages. As for the safety spots, the Lions upgraded underachiever Kenoy Kennedy with Tampa Bay intimidator Jermaine Phillups. Terrence Holt, an athletic FS was able to be resigned. Behind them are former starters Marcus Coleman and Shaun Williams who will be able to step into the starting lineup and not miss a beat if needed.
CB1- Dre Bly--Dante Wesley--Keith Smith
FS- Terrence Holt-- Marcus Coleman
SS- Jermaine Phillups--Shaun Williams
CB2- Lito Sheppard--Alan Zemaitis(R)--Donald Strickland
(9.79725 Million)

SPECIAL TEAMS
The special teams cut Jason Hanson and his large salary for a more youthful leg in Paul Edinger. With his unorthodox style, Edinger has tremendous power and decent accuracy in the clutch. Punter Todd Sauerbrun has a tremendous leg who can consistently give the Lions a victory in the field position battle. Both were viewed as solid veteran additions.
K- Paul Edinger
P- Todd Sauerbrun

Pro Bowler Eddie Drummond will continue to electrify the return game and provide stability in an important aspect to the game.If needed, slot reciever Troy Walters can step in for Drummond.
