By Joshua Houtz“With the 14th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select…”
DeVante Parker, wide receiver Louisville University. When those words were uttered Miami Dolphin fans all over the world let out a sigh of relief. For the first time in the last decade, the Miami Dolphins had a true #1 wide receiver, or at least it had seemed.
In 2014, DeVante Parker missed half the season with an ankle injury. Despite playing six fewer games than the year prior, DeVante Parker recorded the same amount of yards (885). Many were uncertain if Parker would return to finish out the 2014 season, but he did and had an immediate impact on the Cardinals’ season.
Much like his last year at Louisville, Parker has been plagued by an ankle injury. This injury required an additional surgery, forcing Parker to begin the offseason on the PUP list. Parker was removed from the PUP list early last week, and has been spotted on the sideline holding his helmet during Wednesday’s practice.
At the moment, wide receiver appears to be a strength of the Dolphins. Miami has Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, Greg Jennings, and Rishard Matthews, all of whom can pick up the slack while Parker remains sidelined. That doesn’t include the wide receivers who have impressed early throughout training camp. However, none of these receivers can do what Parker can.
During the draft process, many scouts compared DeVante Parker to A.J Green of the Cincinnati Bengals. The 6’3, 209 lbs. play-maker runs sharp, crisp routes. He has the ability to go up and make the catch, shielding defenders with his body. DeVante Parker is deceptively fast, running a 4.45 forty at the combine. Parker is everything you could ask for in a wide receiver, something Dolphins fans can expect to see in the near future.
When Parker is fully healed, the Dolphins offense will have a piece they’ve been missing since Brandon Marshall was traded to the Chicago Bears back in 2012. Parker catches anything within reach and isn’t afraid to go over the middle. He should flourish within Bill Lazor’s high-octane offense. Pairing him with the current core of receivers, defenses will have matchup nightmares trying to defend each of Miami’s weapons.

Whether DeVante Parker is ready by Week 1, or midway through the season. The Miami Dolphins will have a 22 year old phenom, ready to take the next step in his football career. If Parker can remain healthy, the skies the limit for the rookie wide receiver.

I've said it once will say it again. Will be the best WR in fins history. Already have his jersey and can't wait to see him on the field

Wow. Better than Paul Warfield? How about Crash Jenson?

I sure hope you're right. He does seems to have awesome upside IF (???) he can prove durable.

@ArmandoSalguero: I'm told that barring any setbacks, WR DeVante Parker will join practices at least on a limited basis for first time next week.

This guy will be a monster whenever he returns. Don't want to rush him at all.

I don't know about anyone else here, but I'm not "missing" Brandon Marshall.

I feel like Parker is going to be a huge asset once he gets healthy...but I am going to stop short of saying he is going to be a #1 WR for us because I am not certain if Lazor's offense is set up that way. Right now it seems to benefit on spreading that ball around equally to keep the defense off balance, with a preference for short routes that allow Tannehill to get the ball out quickly. Where I think he will really shine is in the end zone, where we need a player that can go up and get the ball over corners.

Not being a debbie downer by any stretch, but more seeing his immediate future as a valuable spoke in the wheel as opposed to the go-to person. If Lazor leaves, though, all bets are off as Parker certainly has the ability to transform a game in a more open system.

Nice. He'll have two weeks to get reps before the opener. I'm betting we at least see some red zone action with him at Washington.

The Fins will probably win the first two even if he isn't in the field. So I say rest him up to be safe or maybe only give him 5-10 snaps a game to ease in. Less game tape for DCs to plan for and a more rested rookie WR. Less likely to be impacted by the rookie wall that way too.

Great career could be ahead for this kid.

They said ankle injury. I thought it was a foot injury. Which is it? Ankle seems better than foot if you ask me.

We are putting together a very young nucleus of players on offense around and including Tannehill.
Gotta love it!

Jensen was not a WR with the FINS, he was a QB,FB,RB, TE and WR hence nicknamed "CRASH". He did a little of everything. But was never a full time WR. As for Pul Warfield, I think he was good but not great.

As highly as I think of Warfield, and how much I loved watching Crash...OH YEA!!! If Parker is able to stay healthy, I think of Parker as a receiver in the dominance of a Megtron, and before I get destroyed for saying that, No, nobody in the right mind can think he will be anywhere as good (Whether he is able to reach that level, will have to be waited and seen).

What I mean is, he will be able to challenge defenses at all points of the field and dominate...quick slant. get behind a defense deep, in the redzone, catch passes and get chunk yards. When you are able to cover a receiver perfectly, or max cover him, and usually still fail to stop him from making the play, that is a special receiver, that is the type of receiver he could be. Then again, I am just going on what I saw in college, and camp before he had surgery....we will see.

My only question about Parker is his long speed. Can he get separation down field?

Did you watch any of Louisville's games last year? My concern was his ability to maintain speed in and out of breaks since most of his routes were rounded off at Louisville...but then I saw him in OTAs and he was a lot quicker than I expected.
