After a college career at Auburn, Wood was a 12th round draft pick of the Baltimore Colts in the 1959 NFL draft. But Wood never played a game in the NFL, playing instead for the Chargers, Broncos, Jets, Raiders and Dolphins in the American Football League. He was the only player to play for five different AFL teams.

Wood was not a great player (his passer rating of 30.6 in 1966 was the second-lowest of any quarterback with at least 200 passes in the last 50 years), but after retiring as a player he had a long career as an assistant coach, coaching college players at Georgia, Ole Miss and Auburn, and working in the NFL with the Raiders, Browns, Falcons, Eagles, Chiefs, Patriots and Jets.

Just to cover my bases here, please keep the comments out of the gutter.

Dick Wood if he could.

Just kidding. I can't believe that's no one's Finheaven handle right now. Would the mods even allow this to be someone's handle?

Oops. Should've read the original post more clearly.

Even if his own obit says "He was not a good player" (ouch), he paved the way for the position occupied by Griese and Marino. RIP Dick Wood

Actually said he was not a "great" player which is different imo. RIP.

Gotta love it. First, Shifty asks to keep the comments out of the gutter and it didn't last one post. Then I scroll down and Bumpus sig has got me in a trance. I am gonna have to mark myself as Unavailable for the rest of the day now.

What's amazing about the Phins is we went from a lousy expansion team in 1966 to the Super Bowl against Dallas in 1971, and then back-to-back SB wins the following seasons. I think Griese was drafted in 1967 or 1968 out of Purdue, and we got Don Shula, the greatest coach ever, a little later on.

Isn't there a Dick Pepperwood on here? Unless I'm remembering that from another message board.
