I was reading the draft history this morning on the sun-sentinel. It showed in 98 that we had the opportunity to pick Randy Moss with the 19th overall pick. Jimmy Johnson said that he didn't fit into the system at the time. He also mentioned his off-the field troubles he had in college. I was totally unaware of this until now.

"They also came after ignoring the chance to take talented-but-troubled wide receiver Randy Moss or even play safe with talented defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday with the No. 19 pick. It also came after deciding not to ante up for free-agent defensive lineman Chester McGlockton.

The Dolphins didn't know that at the time they traded, but it didn't matter.

``If we had been at 19, we would not have selected a player there, we would have traded out of that spot,'' Johnson said.

He said Moss and Holliday didn't fit the Dolphins' version of good value at that point _ Moss because of a lot of off-field problems and talent, Holliday because he was more of a tackle than an end."

AND? What would be your point? We did not get him, so what does it matter now? I could really care less about him. He is an idiot, after leaving Minnesota, what has he done? Nothing. He will amount to nothing without Daunte IMO. GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!!!! :dolphins:

Yeah, reading that just about made me puke even though I already knew all that. THANKS!

Yeah....pretty common knowledge

What that article fails to acknowledge (at least the part posted in the thread), is that we traded down from #19 PRIOR to the draft, so we had no idea who would be abailable at #19.........we certainly had no way of knowing that Moss would still be there at that point.

The wierd thing in there is that I remeber seeing an interview with Johnson after the draft where he said that if he thought that there was any chance that Randy Moss would have still been available at #19, that he wouldn't have ever traded down. Seems as if Jimmy has changed his tune.

Did anyone know the Dolphins starting QB was hurt in their perfect season?

Yes, I think we all knew it...for once JJ went avoided the bad character guy.

Yeah, while he took a chance on a guy who beat up his girlfriend (Lawrence Phillips), and another guy who broke into a house (Cecil Collins). Did Jimmy Johnson make any good acquisitions on the offensive side of the ball when he was in Miami?

I remember watching it live...Jimmy didn't like his attitude, off field problems,etc...so I was OK with it then. I believed that Jimmy knew what he was doing..(ie The draft so called expert)..and belive me that was hard because I was still p*ssed that he of all people replaced Shula...Don Shula...It was real hard for me to get on the Jimmy bandwagon...it felt like he was and always will be the Cowboys coach.:shakeno:

Yes, along with MANY other teams in the league. All the pre-draft hype said he was a head-case and would be nothing but trouble for a team. Boy, they sure got that one wrong, didn't they? Yes, he has a lot of talent and had great stats, but it's his attitude and off-season issues that got him shipped out of Minn. Who's to say that if we had drafted him that he would have been a bust with the QB and gameplan we had at the time? Not to mention if he had been getting into trouble with the law every off-season. He might have been the T.O. of Miami. Hey, I look at it this way - look at how many teams bypassed Marino (and took other QB's) in 83 before we got him second to last pick in the 1st. If I had the choice between getting that deal fall in our laps versus Moss, I'd always take the Marino slide.

That's why I don't always put that much stock into all this pre-draft hype and numbers the press and scouts put on players (good or bad). Because everyone is just guessing because stats and 40 times don't tackle, don't catch passes and don't throw the ball. If you want to really find out about a player, watch game films, as they'll tell you more about their decision-making skills than any combine. JMO of course.
:D

I have this big hole in my Dolphins memory. It starts when Shula retired, and ends when Saban was hired. I can't seem to remember anything in between.

Yeah and looking back over the years we could have had a whole team of superstars. If only they would have had that magical crystal ball I'm always hearing about.
