Did Jakeem Grant run the fastest 40 ever?

DAVIE — Jakeem Grant, candidate to be the Dolphins’ return man in 2016, doesn’t just run fast, he talks fast. He churns out words so quickly that if he were reading this story aloud, you’d swear he’s finishing the next sentence before he started this one.
Can you blame him? He claims to be 5-feet-6 1/2, which would make him one of the tiniest players in Dolphins history. It also makes him a fibber, because he’s actually 5-5 3/4 (and at his size, that extra three-quarters of an inch is, ahem, no small matter).

Grant has to have something going for him to justify the Dolphins spending a sixth-round draft choice on him. It’s so much speed that nobody knows how fast he really is.

The Dolphins timed him in the 4.3s in the 40 at his pro day. The Saints clocked him at 4.10. All Grant knows is if he’d received an invitation to the NFL Combine, as he’d dreamed, he might have — check that, certainly would have — broken Chris Johnson’s record of 4.24.

Grant has legit speed -- even with pads he plays legit 4.3- with insane quick twitch "phone booth" moves. He's a player among the few that I would qualify as playing in the 4.2+ range: he's able to run with Wallace when he was healthy, and able to kill him on quick twitch.

The only thing that will keep him from playing and making an impact for a long time is taking that random odd hit that hurts him. If he stays healthy he's gonna help Miami and give opposing teams headaches. He's a football player not just a prima dona track star who can't see the football in the lights.

It would be cool if he did run that fast but it's hard to say since he wasn't at the combine..

Regardless, he's fast

His vision impress me and with that kind speed and height to hide. He can be dangerous. I hope his receiving ways continue, would love to see him on offense sometimes. But first he's got to make the team. 6th round doesn't guarantee him anything. Plus we saw what a Tannebum jump on the table draftee looked like in Jordan last year. I'm slowly holding my breath for Jakeem to be special.

Of all of our rookies, Grant is who I look forward to seeing most. The dude is freakishly fast and quick.

Love that article. He just grew three quarters an inch -- then another half inch inside two sentences, lol. By game time he's gonna be six feet. :D

There was video. Which means that if you're adding a tenth for a fast track he still ran a 4.22.

which is smokin'

I get that he is fast, we can go back and forth on exactly how fast but I think the real concern I have is what you mentioned earlier- will he get pancaked ala Pat White style?

There are times I watched a Welker and Edelman and said man if someone just lands a good shot on them that's it but I have to admit I have seen them both take huge shots and still keep on going (although we know Welker has the concussions later on and Eddelman is a little beat up at this point).

We would have to help the kid by keeping him on the boundary.....there he has two, well three options when defenders come his way....run out of bounds, juke the guy for a miss and turn it inside (if no one from the middle is powering forward at him), or go to the ground. Easier said than done.

I don't think anyone is going to call Grant a puss by running out of bounds....it's either that or get disabled by 240lb LB.

Yes -- you watch how NE uses those guys (especially Welker) and it was open season just waiting to happen -- all that stuff across the middle in underneath zones. One reason why NE hated playing the Steelers. Steelers physical and agile LBs and safeties would punish those guys. I saw one game NE and Pit where Welker got knocked cold. I mean out before he hit the ground -- on a legal hit. If Miami is dumb enough to waste Grant in that kind of scheme and usage -- well, short career, imo.

But if they play to his strengths -- in space, on edges, on boundary, downfield verticals -- man, he could add a dimension that Miami sorely needs. And have a decent career. imo.

For being so short he has some serious stride length. Wow. Kid can move. Glad he is on our side. Let's just hope he is used properly

We need to play him like the Patriots use some of their small guys. Imagine what the Patriots would do with him.
