DAVIE, Fla. – Quick ... can you name the Miami Dolphins' three starting linebackers for 2015?
At one outside linebacker, you have Jelani Jenkins, who came on strong last year as a first-time starter and led the Dolphins in tackles.
In the middle, you have Koa Misi, who struggled at times playing a new position. The coaches love him, but it's clear he's playing out of position.
Miami's third starting linebacker? It's anyone guess.
The Dolphins failed to draft a linebacker this weekend, which adds more confusion at the position heading into training camp. This was arguably Miami's biggest need heading into the draft and the team passed on the position with seven selections.
There will be a lot of relative unknowns competing for the starting job. Chris McCain, who is a combo defensive end and outside linebacker, free-agent pickup Spencer Paysinger and second-year player
Jordan Tripp are all candidates. It will take offseason workouts and training camp to determine who comes out on top.
“We do like our linebackers,” Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey said. “ We added Spencer Paysinger and have some young guys we're really excited about. Again, we stuck to our board and took the best player available.”
The Dolphins could have found a more certain commodity with one of the top picks in the NFL draft. However, the team addressed other needs. Miami was 24th against the run last season and need better linebacker play if they want to take the next step in 2015.
