DAVIE, Fla. – Quick ... can you name the Miami Dolphins' three starting linebackers for 2015?

At one outside linebacker, you have Jelani Jenkins, who came on strong last year as a first-time starter and led the Dolphins in tackles.

In the middle, you have Koa Misi, who struggled at times playing a new position. The coaches love him, but it's clear he's playing out of position.

Miami's third starting linebacker? It's anyone guess.
The Dolphins failed to draft a linebacker this weekend, which adds more confusion at the position heading into training camp. This was arguably Miami's biggest need heading into the draft and the team passed on the position with seven selections.

There will be a lot of relative unknowns competing for the starting job. Chris McCain, who is a combo defensive end and outside linebacker, free-agent pickup Spencer Paysinger and second-year player

Jordan Tripp are all candidates. It will take offseason workouts and training camp to determine who comes out on top.

“We do like our linebackers,” Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey said. “ We added Spencer Paysinger and have some young guys we're really excited about. Again, we stuck to our board and took the best player available.”

The Dolphins could have found a more certain commodity with one of the top picks in the NFL draft. However, the team addressed other needs. Miami was 24th against the run last season and need better linebacker play if they want to take the next step in 2015.

If you don't trust McCain at LB give Tripp the nod.

Someone posted that they are moving McCain to DE with Dion Jordan MIA. Not sure if it's true.

I think it posted here on FH. It might have been a theory.
I have not read anything from a credible source.

@TheMattyI I know McCain views himself as a defensive end most, but Philbin still makes it seem like he's developing him as a LB.

@TheMattyI @AbramsonPBP anywhere on the green. Again and last time I don't mind playing anywhere. Whatever that helps. Clear enough?

That last tweet was directly from McCain when reporters were saying he will play LB or DE. People starting asking him where he would play himself if he were the coach.

No denying that there is a great reason for concern at lb.

Just because the Dolphins didn't select an ILB doesn't mean they weren't going to. Sometimes the board just doesn't fall your way.

Supposedly, the Dolphins missed on 3 guys they wanted right before our second round selection:

Three times just before the Dolphins picked on Saturday, the player they wanted was taken right before them, a source said. So if they felt fortunate to have DeVante Parker drop to them in the first round, they were feeling a little less fortunate coming out of the final rounds.

If you look where we were scheduled to pick 47, Here are the players right before

2 42 Atlanta Falcons Jalen Collins CB LSU SEC
2 43 Houston Texans Benardrick McKinney ILB Mississippi State SEC from Cleveland [R2 - 4]
2 44 New Orleans Saints Hau'oli Kikaha OLB Washington Pac-12
2 45 Minnesota Vikings Eric Kendricks ILB UCLA Pac-12 2014 Butkus Award and Lott Trophy winner
2 46 San Francisco 49ers Jaquiski Tartt S Samford SoCon [R2 - 5]

I would not be surprised if Benardrick McKinney and Eric Kendricks were two of the players high on the board. Should they have traded up? Time will tell. Same desperation move could have been made in the first round when I thought sure as hell we were going to lose out on Parker.

One (or more) of these misses could have been from our selection of Jordan Phillips
2 48 San Diego Chargers Denzel Perryman ILB Miami (FL) ACC
2 49 Kansas City Chiefs Mitch Morse G Missouri SEC
2 50 Buffalo Bills Ronald Darby CB Florida State ACC
2 51 Cleveland Browns Nate Orchard DE Utah Pac-12 from Houston [R2 - 6]

Again... Here is a ILB (Perryman), G, and a CB. Maybe the Dolphins thought Perryman would still be there? Maybe Mitch Morse was the target? Who knows. I think its likely that McKinney and Kendricks were top targets which led them to trade down.

I have hopes for McCain will see, and people who have said Tripp needs to get stronger - I agree. One or both could work out but lots of questions and 'potential' were talkimg about at the position again. One things for sure, which the FO has already said, we need improvement and development from the players that were here last year or it's going to be really uphill battle.

Have we really seen McCain in space or in coverage? I remember him flashing rushing the passer. I'd love to see him be able to handle strong side linebacker but I just don't know that we've ever seen it.

If it was Saturday, that was Rounds 4-7, so it wouldn't have been any of the players you mentioned in the 2nd round.

nice take.

I don't think Misi at MLB is necessarily a miscast. I can see how the FO would be content with his play there, but I believe our biggest concern for him is his ability to stay healthy.

If Saturday could have been Jackson or Clemmings maybe that were taken just before our 4th round pick back to back. Maybe Diggs and Heeney in the fifth.
