did Parcells almost hire Rex Ryan?

Lets hope he isn't as good a football guy. I think Sparano was the best choice.

I think it is pretty obvious that Parcells made the right decision in hiring Sparano. Sparano from day one(he pitched Sparano's name to Atlanta when he was being wooed by them) was Parcells' number one choice.

We will see if Rex has what it takes against the elite AFC East teams like the Dolphins and Patriots.

i think rex will be good.. although i def feel like sparano is a better coach cuz hes a "player's coach"

Parcells and Ireland knew Sparano best and hired him; Ozzie Newsome who knew Ryan best (and understanding he could lose Rex as the Raven's DC) nevertheless instead went outside and hired a ST and DB rookie coach. And obviously Atlanta liked Smith more than Ryan.

Maybe Ozzie glimpsed some of the same HC "potential" in Ryan that he saw in his predecessors Nolan and Lewis? Parcells also said he like Swartz (finally hired by Detroit after competing with our Bowles.. and Frazier, who's yet to be hired... so I guess we can take this praise for what it's worth. No doubt in my mind we got the right man for the job.

Oh come on. Lets be fair here. The only elite AFC East team is the Patriots and thats with a healthy Brady. Im not trying to take anything away from the Dolphins, Jets, or Bills but elite?

Hearing Parcells endorse Rex is nice. I know he told Rex that he could use him as a reference. It would be funny though if he was telling Rex that because he thinks he will be a terrible coach and wants him to coach the Dolphins rival.

Rex Ryan scares the hell out of me has the JETS coach.

Problem is that what makes Bill better then most, is that he is a great motivator, knows what it takes to create a top team, and has a very good eye for talent.

1. Rex is nowhere the motivator Bill is.

2. He has yet to show what type of a plan he has to turn a team around

3. He will also be showing for the 1st time how good his talent evaluation is.

All he has proven is that he knows how to Coach a defense, has a very big head, just like his father, and he very well may not be able to hack it as a HC like his dad. Steve Serby is the biggest Jets loving journalist there is, and he is buying this like a school girl writing about her teen idol.

Not Saying Rex might not become a good to great HC, but there is little so far that makes you believe he will be.....just like his Father.

i hope youre right.

I think Rex was a good hire for the Jets. We'll see what he does with it. We already know we're up against Belichick every season.

It will be interesting to see how Tony handles season two. Looking back he had his hands full day one and kept finding a way to keep pushing and raising expectations. You wont find an early mock draft that didn't have us picking top 10 in the 09 draft. I think Tony learned a lot last season and that should help him get better as a coach.

As long as Tuna is up in our box, I have no fear of any team's front office or coaching staff.
