Did Philbin Just Bamboozle Everyone?

But why?
He already knows it.
A coach should do it privately first. So if he did do it privately, that would have to have been after week two which was the first bad game.
So if he did that, then he told Tannehill he could be benched after one bad Buffalo game with an injured running back. Why would you do such a thing after one bad game in week two?
Na, I don't think Philbin knows what he is doing.

So coddle your 3rd year QB?

The former president of the best soccer club in Germany (and probably Europe), Uli Hoeness, used to do this all the time. Whenever the team was playing bad Hoeness would go nuts in the press conferences. But he directed all his anger away from the coaches and players. In most cases he blamed the media.

What he accomplished with this was that the media didn't focus on the players and coaches but on him. He put himself in the spotlight, took all the heat for two to three weeks. It allowed the team to work on the miscues and correct them without any media distraction.

Everyone in the country thought that Hoeness is a jerk but in hindsight it was genius. The team would always recover quickly.

Having said that, I don't believe for a second that this is what Philbin was trying to do. And if he was, he did it wrong from top to bottom. Should take some lessons from Hoeness. Who by the way is in jail at the moment for tax fraud.

Master motivator, Joe Philbin. The guy whose team starts out godawful each game....coming out slow as molasses.

The original OC theory is possible. Another thought that came to might, was that Philbin simply wanted to delay naming a starter so that Oakland would have to prepare for 2 QB's rather than one. At the end of the day, we all knew this team, including the coaches, had flaws, and it came down how Tannehill grew as a QB. After 3 games we've had some good moments, but a combination of Tannehill and receivers have let us down. I also realize there is blame for Lazor not running the ball enough, but I'm not too sure. Just thinking out loud: if I were the OC and wanted to get my QB out of funk, I would make "get back into the saddle" until he got it right.

I may be over thinking this, but look at what has happened in the last 48 hours:
  • Philbin sends a veiled shot at Tannehill and the offense with his message of non-committal
  • The offensive starters publicly defend their quarterback and rally behind him
  • The formerly quiet and dutiful Tannehill confronts his head coach, names HIMSELF starter, and publicly expresses his ire but at the same time publicly expresses his confidence that the team will turn things around

Philbin just took the stress of a distracting travel game to London and put all of the attention on himself. On the surface, it looks like he created a distraction for Tannehill and the team, but after losing 2 straight to teams they probably should have beaten, the pressure was likely on anyway. Now instead of the media harping on what a loss to the Raiders could mean, Philbin is soaking up the negative media. Better yet, Tannehill, the offense, and the whole team are hopping mad and looking to prove Philbin and the doubters wrong.

This team rallied together after the Incognito/Martin scandal last year. Could Philbin's flub, maybe intentional, be what brings the team together this week?

I'd like to see a pissed-off Ryan Tannehill play, he could use some anger out there

THIS times a thousand!! He is always so laid back and calm....would love to see him just get pissed and start chucking the ball with an "attack" mentality. Quit trying to use so much finesse and just go out like a pissed off warrior! Play QB like Wake plays DE!!!

I doubt Philbin is that smart, but if this lights a fire under Tannehill, maybe he is just that. Tannehill has played too comfortable...

One thing about Philbin he gets the guys ready when there backs are against the wall, I think he will have them ready to play this weekend....this is the first must win game of the season....

Ya, they were so ready to play the Jets to end the season last year...
