Listen, the title already will put me on a few of your blacklist. For that I understand. I am just trying to understand the depth chart of our team heading into OTA (Organized Team Activities) and Training Camp.

Now that the dust has settled, and the draft is officially over, our roster is starting to take shape. As this starts happening one has to start thinking about the most highlighted position, the quarterback. Ryan Tannenhill is entering his fourth year and the Miami Dolphins decided to pick up his 16 million dollar option. This is what surprised him. Why would the Dolphins allocate such a high price tag to a player that cannot attack all elements of the field?

I never played quarterback, but I did play Safety. My DB coach would tell me about three segmentations on the field. Segment 1st, was the line of scrimmage. The 2nd Segment, was from the Line of Scrimmage to 20 yards and lastly the 3rd segment was anything beyond 20+ yards. Our DB coach would advise us how to react to opposing QBs tendency for each segment. How to attack them and what to specifically look for.

As all Miami Dolphins fans have seen, Tannenhill can only attack 2 segments of the field; segment 1 and 2. We have not constantly seen him using the third segment or even try to attack it. This limits his abilities and caused opposing Defensive Coordinators to attack this weakness. You can easily call a press man coverage with only single high safety and not have to worry if the Wide Receiver breaks the press. It allows for different variations and schemas to be applied for segment 1 and 2. It causes more players to be in a limited amount of space

The only mistake could be not locking him up long term a year before he really has a great season. Him and the team. Also there is no other option worth any risk. Wallace bombs sucked but that's it. Hopefully some receivers with more consistency and radius help.

we have invested a lot into much worse things. The future hinges on this. He's only shown progression. It's simply not even a question if you pick up the option. The question is if you give him the extension prior too.

I'd rather read the most boring book ever written, The Most Boring Book Ever Written, than this above

Considering that Miami's current contractual obligation to Tannehill is vastly shorter than your post, I feel good about him.

Hes never going to see that 16 mil. And if you think he hasn't proven his worthiness of that amount wait until you see the guarantees in his extension. Hes due 60+ easy.....probably more if the other QB extensions are done first.

Like it or not hes the QB for this team for at least the next 3 years.

Who the hell is Tannenhill?

100% right. Adding and subtracting players the past 2 years whether the additions make this team better or not. The bottom line, last year and this years team major component to be successful is the QB. Both squads are talented enough to make the playoffs. QB held them back last year. Curious to see this years results

16 Million is the cost of a QB with 4 years under his belt - if he should "grow" more we are looking at north of 20 million - it was wise to lock him up especially after giving him those new weapons

Good homework done on this one...like Alex Smith's contract being cap friendly, basically the basis of the article. Except Smith is making $17M a year over 4 years...jabroni wrote this.

A handful of teams in the NFL have bonafide franchise QB's. Meanwhile, the majority of NFL teams are in the middle of trying to figure out if the likes of a Bryce Petty can unseat the likes of a Geno Smith. I'm willing to see how things play out with Tannehill. He does need to improve on his deep ball. Badly. However, he still does do enough things well to put us in a better position QB wise than many other teams.
