[h=1]Thanks to guts and a bit of luck, trade with Eagles a win-win for Dolphins[/h]For all the hand-wringing over the Dolphins’ decision to trade back into the first round of the NFL Draft, it’s hard to see it as anything but a win for Mike Tannenbaum.

The Dolphins did indeed get two starters from Philadelphia (linebacker Kiko Alonso and cornerback Byron Maxwell).

And they drafted the player at No. 13 whom they would have taken at No. 8 — and at a discount.

Laremy Tunsil was the second-rated player on the Dolphins’ draft board behind Jalen Ramsey.

The Dolphins never dreamed Tunsil would be available at No. 13. Of course, they probably never imagined a video of Tunsil smoking a bong through a gas mask would be posted on his hacked Twitter account just minutes before the draft, either.

But they were confident in their vetting of the Ole Miss lineman, so there’s no reason to think that they would have passed on him at No. 8. And by getting Tunsil at No. 13, they saved some $3.5 million over the course of his rookie contract, and millions more if they pick up his fifth-year option.

“Going back to January with the eighth pick in the draft and adding guys, Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell, that kind of set the table,” Tannenbaum said late Saturday. “And then adding the draft choices over the last three days, we feel like we’ve improved the team, added competition and added depth. [We are] really excited about where we are.”

That’s the good news.

The bad?

There are still questions about the defensive roster, particularly at linebacker and slot cornerback.

The Dolphins’ streak of not taking a linebacker in the first round is now 24 years (Marco Coleman in 1992 was the last).

That wasn’t a huge surprise. This was: They didn’t take one in rounds two through seven, either.

In fact, they have only selected a linebacker in the first three rounds just twice since 2002 (Koa Misi in 2010 and Channing Crowder in 2005).

Tannenbaum explained the franchise’s thinking at the position:

“We think Kiko can be a significant upgrade. The more you study those things, a player the second year after an injury, traditionally you see a bigger uptick. We think he has a chance to be a really good player for us. Certainly, there were some linebackers we thought of. The board just fell the way it did.”

And although the Dolphins haven’t ruled out adding a veteran in the months to come — either as a free agent or after training camp cuts — the team is optimistic that Zach Vigil will continue to develop in Year 2.

As for the cornerback position, Maxwell and Xavien Howard will start, but who will play the nickel?

Your thoughts.......? :ponder:

I dont think theres any question that events worked out in such a way that the trade was a success for us.

I still think it was the wrong move at the time, though. I guess the best way to put it is that I dont think that we made a good trade, but be lucked out and it benefited us. Kind of like playing a hand of poker poorly and getting bailed out by a long shot river card. The trade wasnt terrible at the time, but I dont think we got proper value for the pick from the Eagles.

The Giants were the big losers here. They shouldve taken Tunsil over Apple. They panicked and didnt do there homework on Laremy.

is this also representing the eat crow thread for people that were bitching before letting this all play out ? you know who you are

i hope zack vigil continues to develop as well, but neville hewitt showed he was the prize of the UDFA LB's of 2015. he's the guy to watch.

I liked it from the get go. Take away everything else, and in all likelihood we got a very good starting linebacker, at a position of need, to move back 5 spots.

If you do well with your round 1 pick, you might get a very good starter. We got that and still kept a high first round pick. A good CB is not a bad deal sweetener.

yup. we traded down and got jared odrick late in the first and koa misi in the second.

They "won" the trade because Tunsil was still on the board.

If Kiko and Byron are mediocre, Eagles win trade.

That's the draft for you.

Never know whose gonna drop, yes his drop wasn't a normal drop, but it's also the reason why you can't scream "zomg they traded down" until after all the events play out.

I wonder if we would have taken Tunsil at 8?

If we end up with 3 solid starters, it was worth the trade, whether the 13th pick was Tunsil or another player.

Don't forget they gave OV the most guaranteed money ever. At least he'll be able to pay his own fines easily now!

The Dolphins have had a blind spot for drafting linebackers early for a very long time. They got service above and beyond out of Bryan Cox and Zach Thomas (5th rounders) so that mitigated a need to draft an impact linebacker early. Channing Crowder was serviceable and then they used free agents like Dansby, Burnett, Ellerbe, and Wheeler to fill in the position to varying degrees of success. They just always seem to have some bigger need to fill or some sort of "Plan B" to find an impact linebacker. Parcels was always said to be looking for his next Lawrence Taylor in the draft. But he didn't spring for a linebacker in the first round when running the Dolphins. He picked Jake Long over Chris Long and Vontae Davis over Clay Matthews Jr. Not second guessing those decisions, but he had a shot at impact/playmaking linebackers. Patrick Willis should have been a Dolphin in 2007 (thanks Randy Mueller) and, barring how Tannehill progresses under Gase this year, Luke Kuechley was there for the taking.
