I think Houck has done a good job in turning around some of the young players like Carey and Hadnot. I admit to being optimistic before last year that he could build a line with young players and castoff veterans in much the same way as he did in San Diego. However, looking at the performances of Jeno James and LJ Shelton, I think we have to ask ourselves if the failure is Houck's teachings, Houck's talent evaluations, or Saban's/Mueller's talent evaluations. Does Houck have enough talent to work with, or was he stuck with ill-fitting parts?

I think the failures of the offensive line might be the biggest factor in the downfall of the team this year.

he is not a miracle worker

Jeno James sucks so bad that I miss McKinney and our right guards are like Spinal Tap drummers

we should draft a stud LT and sign a Jeno J replacement in FA

I'm not going to question anything, I just want to point at that James is playing injured. I don't think he has lived up to his contract, but he has not been at all bad considering his effort and performance.

I've said it once or twice on here before, I think Houck is a good coach, but the big 330 lb + across the line type of players aren't gonna cut it in today's NFL, maybe back when he was with Dallas in the early 90's it worked. Look at all the teams now, Pittsburgh, Denver, Atlanta, all have smaller more mobile lines. I think we need to get back to that philosophy, back when Ricky led the league in rushing, Todd Wade was our biggest OLman, and was only 315 pounds.

it worked last year, but i feel you

the best centers are certainly not big, we could really use the next Kevin Mawae

ironically our ancient DT's are probably the only guys that our OL could handle

our guys are big but they can't sustain a block for 1 second, time to change that

I absolutely agree. I think quicker, more mobile linemen would be better able to handle the faster players and adjustments needed to pick up the multitude of blitz schemes we see in today's NFL.

Nails was pretty damn good and the biggest

We need @ least 3 picks in this draft just for the O-line,and maybe 2 more free agent pick-ups.

OL need to be smart too

Shelton and James aren't that

Carey and Hadnot are smart enough, we need to get a C and move Hadnot to LG

I dont think huock is all to blame with how bad our oline is performing..

I think that its the injuries that have occured on the line...too many!

that is an overreaction, we need to draft a LT and maybe a C

we need to spend most of our draft on defense

Nails was good, he was big, but the line as a whole wasn't nearly as big as this year's group. Nails also had a very mobile Mark Dixon blocking next to him the year Ricky led the leauge in rushing. Nails was a mauler, but Dixon, Ruddy, Todd Perry and Todd Wade all could move pretty well. IMO, I think Hadnot and Carey would better serve as the RG and RT like last year, we need a smaller quicker center that can get to teh second level of the defense. James is a mauler, but he doesn't really move all that well and is slow in blitz pickups. Shelton...well, he was cut by Cleveland and Arizona.

BTW - good call on Nails, I had forgotten about him.

Yea, I mean considering that McMike wiffed on 2 sacks, the OL has given way too many sacks the last few games

Let's move on. The OL isn't pro bowl quality, but they've come around. Considering half of them suck or are not starting quality, Houck has far exceeded any reasonable coaching expectation.

true, that is why I am saying that we need only to get a C and a LT

Toledo could be the athletic guy we are looking for in the future too

I thought the OL was much improved compared to earlier in the season (though it could be because Culpepper seems to need half an hour to pick someone to throw to). James and Shelton were horrible to begin with. They're both weaker than their size would suggest which is what they should be good for. Houck's good but he's not a miracle worker. He was stuck with bad parts and he did his best to make them fit (i.e. swapping D-Mac and Shelton worked pretty well against the Jets). But considering that there weren't too many feasible solutions out there, we were just strapped but how we passed on Mawae and Ashworth is befuddling.
