Did any of you watch the HBO show that Marino is on...yesterday? He said Coaches are hype. Who needs them. Except Shula of course...as he soon later had to state. :rofl3:

I have to agree with him to a point....many of the coaches that come to the NFL....Just don't succeed....and never should have been NFL coaches to begin with. Sometimes their rep's are so bloated....it just seems they know what's going on...but like some players just can't understand the NFL game.

Glad Danny said it anyway...it's something that should have been said along time ago.

Coaches can make all the difference in the world sometimes.. But sometimes they cant..

But if you think coaches are just window dressing you are mistaken.. I doubt Wanny could win a superbowl with the 85 Bears given twenty years to do so.

Just thought it was refreshing that a player like Danny would say what many think...and are afraid to say.

HAHAHA...Tell the STRUGGLING Patriots who lost both coordinators, that coaches don't matter.

dude maybe he was being sarcastic? if it wan'st for saban, this team this year would have been the lions of 32423 yrs.

Ya but we don't know how much influence is from those guys being gone or from the fact that they suffered an inordinate amount of injuries.

So its official then. Not only has Dan lost it, but so has Pete.

Coaches and front offices are the most important part of the game.

Why? because every team has a good amount of talent now that the cap is in place. So, teaching, schemes, game plans, focusing the team, and players let go and brought in, etc., are SO HUGE now.

You just can not accumulate the talent to be THAT MUCH better than other teams anymore. A lot of games come down to the final drives now a days, were play calling and crucial decisions win it or lose it.

Are players important? Yes, very. But who brings them in? Who makes sure they are doing what they are supposed to? Who can put them in a position to win or lose? Coaches and the FO.

Having 10-20 guys on the injury list alsmost every week and still being able to win 5 games does not look to me like the Pats have any setbacks in the coaching department.

True indeed. Imagine if they were healthy.

That's an extremely ignorant statement by Danny.

Most likely, he said it in jest. Head coaches are hype.. yeah ok. If you believe that then you've never been in (or enjoyed) competition in your entire life let alone play on a football field.

Dan is my favorite player of all time--hands down. But let's not kid ourselves here-Dan is not the shaprest knife in the drawer. Even though I know it is not an indicator of athletic ability or future success in the NFL, Dan did barely score his jersey number on the Wonderlic test.

Now, let's think about this comment. Who has one the last three out of four Superbowls? And if anyone argues that this was not a product of coaching, then something is bad wrong with you.

As cliche as it is to say, in today's era of salary cap and revenue sharing, the only thing that you can truly control and buy is coaching. Look at what the Patriots have done. Belicheck obviously knows a thing or two about coaching-namely 2 major things. First, he develops schemes that allow him to shut down most teams in the league (see Indy Colts). Now I know that this year is a different story, but injuries do matter, especially if you have as many as they do. Second, look at his assistant coaches. Charlie Weiss is a football genious. Look what he has done with the Patriots offense-made a 6th round pick a Super Bowl MVP with mediocre receivers and RB's around him. Look at what he has done with ND. He has them in the Top 10 with the same athletes that Tyrone couldnt post a winning record with.

From a former college football player, although be it a smaller college, I can tell you first hand that coaching does matter. Throughout my four years as a starter, we had a different offensive coordinator every year. When you have coaches shuffling through the system like this, you break the consistent message that you are trying to instill in your team. There is no belief in what the team is trying to accomplish.

In summation, coaches bring consistency and instill a culture throughout an entire organization. When players don't believe in the system, which is be controlled by the coaches, then the team sets itself up for failure.

Bottom line, coaching does matter. Athletes are usually not smart enough or understand the intracacies of football enough to put a game plan together and call their own games. Sorry Dan, but you are wrong.
