I was reading a draft magazine that a freind of mine bought over the weekend and when I looked at the Patriots draft of last year....Did you guys know the Patriots only kept one player from last years draft?

Yup. That's right, the only player the Patriots kept out of last years draft was Brandon Meriweather. Everybody else did not make the team.

They say teams are built through the draft, but this makes me wonder. Alot of people seem to praise Scott Pioli, but what has he done lately?

And yet, the team went 18-1 with a Superbowl appearance. I think they're doing a bit better than we are at the moment.

Exactly. What has Pioli done lately? In 2008, his Pats won more games than the Dolphins have in the past 3 years combined!!!

We only won 16 games in the past 3 years!!!!!

This is true, but I do think that what the original thread creator is saying has merit.

They very much built last years team through FA to win it all..LAST YEAR.

They have already lost lots of key-componants, primarily on defense, and arent prepared to just plug in the youngsters they usually have waiting in the folds.

They are going to have to get aggresive again in FA this year, something they havent done at all to date.

They do have the fortune of having a high-first round pick, but they are gonna need lots of help on defense to plug the holes of those that left, and those that are really getting too old to be effective.

Teams normally run a span of greatness for 4-6 years...and then they go down hill. It happened to the Dolphins, it happened to the Bills...teams get old...players move on...coaches get fired...or retire...or move on also.

The reason only 1 guy was kept from their draft speaks more about how talented the team was than anything else.

Very true.
But what they did was Mortgage the talent they had..They let the good young talent go, and opted for higher priced older guys they got mostly through FA. That hurts them in a couple of ways.
The age thing is obvious, but the Cap-hit is also starting to catch up with them

Every dynasty has their 3-5 year run and then it ends.....look at the Phins, Steelers, Cowboys, and 49ers.....you eventually have your star players get greedy and move on to other teams, and your players get old. I think the Patriot's defense is getting really old....Seau, Vrable, Harrison and Bruschi are on their last legs....Asante Samuel is gone..they still have a great offense with Brady and Moss but I think the Pats glory days are over.

Except the Patriots have been successful for 7 years, and they are poised to make another run. They have a lot of draft picks this year.

Last year, they had -

1st
4th
5th
a couple of 6ths
and a 7th.

It wasnt like they cut 2nd and 3rd round guys. They picked from the bottom of the 4th on. Hard to make a championship team as a 5th-7th round pick

Uhhmmmm....Tom Brady was a 5th round pick:up:

 I had a feeling that was coming.

Brady was not drafted onto a Championship team. Brady helped CREATE a championship team. He's the exception, not the rule.

Oh, and Tom Brady was a sixth round pick. Not fifth.

Yeah, my bad. And in fact it was a Compensatory pick at that.

Actually, that has been a huge part of the Pats longevity at the top. They have been VERY good at picking and keeping their picks, top to bottom
My previous point was they got away from that last year. Bringing in MANY Free Agents, two of whom were even VERY high profile. I believe they were going for broke, and this next year it is gonna hurt them..alot.

If they couldnt win it with the team they had last year, it is gonna be much tougher this year. That defense is OLD, and now they have lost both starting CB's and very well might lose a safety as well.

I don't see the Pats taking a turn for the worse for a long time. They still have a good amount of young talent. It's true they also have a good amount of aging veterans, but I'm sure they will start to fill their holes right away. They may not be a threat for a perfect season in a few years but I doubt they'll be missing the playoffs anytime soon.

I'm actually kinda scared of the Jets. They have a lot of good young talent. Even the Bills have some great young guys.

We're gonna have our work cut out for us in this division for quite a few years.
